Wash Your Hands. Save a Life: Hand Hygiene Week Begins July 25, 2016

Proper hand hygiene is an effective, evidence-based method to prevent infection. As physicians, we play a critical role in ensuring the safety of each of our patients and protecting them from hospital-acquired infections.

From July 25 to July 29, Cooper will be celebrating Hand Hygiene week. Many activities are planned over the course of the week to raise awareness, including a special video message from Stephanie Conners,  (Click here to see video) a hand hygiene slogan naming contest and daily tips and educational material for staff.  A special highlight of the week will be “Catch me if you can” Rounds, a focus on embedding hand hygiene compliance into daily rounding culture. “Catch me if you can” rounds include prizes for team members who point out attending physician’s missed opportunities for proper hand hygiene on patient care rounds.

Studies have shown that physician behavior can influence hand hygiene compliance in other healthcare workers. It is important that we as physicians demonstrate leadership in proper and consistent hand hygiene practices. We encourage you to empower your teams and your patients to speak up.

If you would like to recognize a colleague for leading the hand hygiene charge in your area or department, or if there’s anything we can do to support your efforts, please email us at

Fraimow-henry@cooperhealth.edu or Pukenas-erin@cooperhealth.edu.

Thank you for everything you do to keep our patients safe and infection-free.

-Henry and Erin
