Annual Children’s Regional Hospital Fundraiser to Honor Two Pediatric Leaders

Two esteemed leaders in Pediatric Medicine and Nursing will be honored during the A Tribute to Children’s Regional Hospital Anat R. Feingold, MD, and Jackie Ficerai Tedeschi, RN. The event will take place on Wednesday, June 12, at 5 p.m. at Cooper University Hospital, Roberts Pavilion, 10th Floor.

Anat R. Feingold, MD

Anat R. Feingold, MD, is the Division Head of Pediatric Infectious Diseases; Director of the Inpatient Pediatric Unit; Associate Program Director of the Pediatric Residency Program at Cooper; and the Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Cooper Medical School of Rowan University. She first joined Children’s Regional Hospital at Cooper in 1994, as an attending physician practicing closely with former chief of pediatrics Dr. Sidney Sussman in the Southern New Jersey Pediatric AIDS Program at Cooper.

Dr. Feingold’s passion for activism in the AIDS epidemic was sparked during her first fellowship at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, New York City, where AIDS was already devastating families and communities. During that time, she completed her Master’s in Public Health at Columbia University, and worked as a junior attending physician with IV drug users and their families in a methadone program. Dr. Feingold then spent a year in Nairobi, Kenya helping design and build a health clinic outside the capitol. Her second fellowship, in pediatric infectious disease, was at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children in Philadelphia. She holds an M.D. from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri.

During her years of clinical practice, Dr. Feingold has received numerous teaching awards, and recognition from the March of Dimes and AIDS activist organizations. She has been named to lists of “Top Docs” in Philadelphia and South Jersey publications multiple times. She and her husband Nate, who serves as Chief Medical Officer at Bellevue Hospital in New York
City, have been married 27 years and have two daughters, Lani and Mara, and a son, Jordan.

Jackie Ficerai Tedeschi, RN, CPN,is celebrating twenty-four years as a pediatric nurse at Children’s Regional Hospital at Cooper this year. She began her career at Cooper as a staff nurse

Jackie Ficerai Tedeschi, RN, CPN

and 18 months later was promoted to Associate Clinical Director of Pediatrics and the PICU, where she still serves today.

During her tenure at Cooper, Jackie has been nominated for countless awards in the nursing field. In 2000, she received Cooper’s prestigious Ruby Gross Leadership Award in Nursing, given annually to a nurse who demonstrates exceptional teamwork and leadership qualities. Jackie is well-known for coaching and mentoring colleagues over the years, and shaping them into exceptional nurse leaders.

Born and raised in Berlin, N.J., Jackie discovered nursing in college and chose it as a career path because of the many opportunities within the field. She says Pediatrics has always held a special place for her because she is inspired by the courage and spirit of children and their families. She also appreciates her work at Cooper because it gives her the chance to impact families, and in turn be touched by them as well.

Jackie’s get away from work is bass fishing. She is married to noted local pediatrician Dr. John B. Tedeschi and they have a daughter, Nicoletta, age 4.

Cooper Doctors, Med Students Explore Ethics of Personalized Medicine with World Renowned Expert

Arthur Caplan, PhD, speaks to physicians, fellows, residents and medical students at Cooper Medical School during the Inaugural Berkowitz Lecture.

Personalized medicine is a young but rapidly advancing field of healthcare. It involves identifying genetic, genomic, and clinical information that allows accurate predictions to be made about a person’s susceptibility of developing disease, the course of disease, and its response to treatment. Doctors can now develop medical treatments that are as individualized as their patient’s disease.

While the idea of personalized medicine sounds enticing to both patients and medical practitioners, there is great responsibility with the information derived during the process. The biggest issues relate to privacy and autonomy. How can this information be protected from profiling by insurance companies, employers, and even potential mates? And if a patient knows they are at risk for a genetic disease, especially one without a cure such as Alzheimer’s disease, how does that affect the privacy and autonomy of other family members?

These are just a few of complicated topics that were discussed with physicians, fellows, residents and medical students at Cooper Medical School of Rowan University by world-renowned bioethicist Arthur Caplan, PhD, at the Inaugural Berkowitz Lecture.

“All physicians, regardless of their specialty or their skills, will surely be faced with numerous difficult ethical issues throughout their careers,” explained Edwin Berkowitz, the successful Pennsylvania businessman and philanthropist whose foundation provided a grant to The Cooper Foundation to fund the event. “By helping to engage doctors and future doctors in thoughtful, honest discussions about these issues, I believe we will help to foster kindness and concern, and ultimately improve patient care for all.”

The Berkowitz Family Foundation recently provided a significant gift to The Cooper Foundation to hold annual educational programs for physicians and students on medical ethics featuring world-renowned experts in the field. Cooper urologist Joel Marmar, MD, was instrumental in securing the grant. Dr. Marmar has had a professional relationship and long term friendship with Mr. Berkowitz.

“We were pleased to kick off this important annual event with Dr. Arthur Caplan,” said Dr. Marmar. “As one of the nation’s luminaries in the field of medical ethics, it’s an honor and a privilege to have him as Cooper’s guest.”

Dr. Caplan is the Drs. William F. and Virginia Connolly Mitty Chair and Director, Division of Medical Ethics at New York University Langone Medical Center. Prior to joining NYU Dr. Caplan was the Sidney D. Caplan Professor of Bioethics at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia where he created the Center for Bioethics and the Department of Medical Ethics. He also taught at the University of Minnesota, where he founded the Center for Biomedical Ethics, the University of Pittsburgh, and Columbia University.

“This was an excellent opportunity for our students and faculty,” added Annette Reboli, MD, Vice Dean of Cooper Medical School. “Dr. Caplan is widely known for his thoughtful, engaging and provocative discussions, and this program, which delved into the emerging field of the ethics of personalized medicine, will be an event to remember.”

Arthur Caplan, PhD, is the Drs. William F. and Virginia Connolly Mitty Chair, and Director, Division of Medical Ethics, NYU Langone Medical Center.

Nationally-renowned bioethicist Arthur Caplan, PhD, will present “Medicine Just for You? The Promise and Perils of Personalized Medicine” to Cooper physicians, fellows, residents and students on Tuesday, March 5, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., in the auditorium of the Cooper Medical School of Rowan University.

The presentation is part of the inaugural Berkowitz Lecture Series, which was established as a result of a significant educational gift to The Cooper Foundation from the Berkowitz Family Foundation of Merion, Pa.

Dr. Caplan is the Drs. William F. and Virginia Connolly Mitty Chair, and Director, Division of Medical Ethics, NYU Langone Medical Center. A dynamic presenter, Dr. Caplan is widely known for his thoughtful, engaging and provocative discussions.

Prior to joining NYU he was the Sidney D. Dr. Caplan also taught at the University of Minnesota, where he founded the Center for Biomedical Ethics, the University of Pittsburgh, and Columbia University.

Mr. Edwin Berkowitz, Chairman of the Board of JE Berkowitz, LP, has served on several academic boards, including the Advisory Board of the University of Pennsylvania’s Center for Bioethics, under the leadership of Dr. Caplan. On a personal level as a patient, Mr. Berkowitz has observed the importance of ethical behavior and empathy by health care professionals. He is passionate when discussing the role of medical ethics in every day care and the ethical considerations in the development of unique treatments and medical technology.

The Cooper Foundation today announced a $100,000 gift from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 351 in support of the ongoing $50 million Cooper Campaign for the continued growth of Cooper University Hospital.

“The members of IBEW Local 351 have always been generous supporters of Cooper and of the South Jersey region, and we thank them,” said George E. Norcross, III, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Cooper Health System and Cooper University Hospital. “This donation will help ensure families from across the region will continue to have access to world class healthcare, right here in South Jersey.”

In appreciation of the contribution, the Foundation unveiled a sign outside the hospital gift shop recognizing IBEW Local 351 for its generosity. In attendance for the sign unveiling were: John P. Sheridan, Jr., President and CEO, Cooper University Health Care; Adrienne Kirby, Senior Executive Vice President and COO, Cooper University Health Care; Susan Bass Levin, President and CEO, The Cooper Foundation; Sen. Donald Norcross, also an IBEW member; Edward Gant, Business Manager, IBEW Local 351, and several other IBEW officers.

“IBEW Local 351 is proud to make this gift in support of Cooper University Hospital,” Gant said. “Our members and their families live in South Jersey, and we recognize how important it is to have high quality healthcare that we can count on. Moreover, Cooper is a significant contributor to our region’s economy, and its growth will help create and sustain more good-paying jobs in our community.”

The cornerstone of The Cooper Campaign is the construction of the new $100 million Cooper Cancer Institute, located on the Cooper Health Sciences Campus in Camden and opening in the fall of 2013. The Campaign will also support new, advanced programs and technology at the Cooper Heart Institute, the Bone and Joint Institute, the Children’s Regional Hospital at Cooper and the Trauma Center.

“The generosity of IBEW Local 351 will help enable Cooper to continue its most dramatic expansion in its 125-year history,” said Levin. “Support for Cooper makes a difference in the lives of patients and their families every single day and goes a long way in supporting the revitalization of neighborhoods surrounding the Cooper Health Sciences Campus.”
