Listeria Alert: Precautions Urged for South Jersey Residents

A recent multi-state outbreak of listeriosis — the rare, but potentially lethal infection caused by the bacteria listeria — has local doctors and caregivers on alert. While no cases have been reported in the tri-county area, doctors are warning patients to be cautious, especially pregnant women and the elderly. Symptoms of listeriosis can resemble the flu: fever, headache, nausea and diarrhea.

“Unlike other bacteria, listeria can penetrate other cells within the body,” explained Henry S. Fraimow, MD, Infectious Disease Specialist at Cooper. “For those in weakened health, like the elderly, it can be a real problem.”
