Patient Safety Sentinel: Stethoscope Cleaning

Stethoscope Cleaning

When: BEFORE and AFTER each use.

How: Wipe stethoscopes with 70 percent isopropyl alcohol wipe.  Clean all surfaces of stethoscope including the bell and tubing.

Why
: Prevent bacteria transmission to patient, self, and equipment.

Be sure there is an ample supply of alcohol pads available.

Maintain a supply of disposable stethoscopes to meet the isolation needs on your unit.

Isolation Rooms MUST have their own stethoscopes, which remain in the patient’s room. Isolation stethoscopes require the same cleaning procedure as non-isolation rooms.

Protecting our patients is the top priority at Cooper University Health Care. We need 100 percent compliance with all patient safety procedures.

A sentinel is one who stands guard or watch to protect others. We need all employees to be sentinels to protect our patients and keep watch to ensure all patient safety procedures are being strictly followed.

One Team. One Purpose.
