New Power Plant Construction Update and Street Closures

Construction is continuing on the new combined heat and power plant, also known as the co-gen project, which will provide Cooper with efficient power and the ability to provide power during emergency outages. The power plant will connect to all Cooper buildings located on the Health Sciences Campus.

The project is continuing in phases that will result in periodic road closures and traffic pattern changes in the area around Cooper’s Emergency Department. All hospital services will remain open and available during these temporary road closures; however, they may affect commute times to and from the hospital. Please allow additional time in case of delays.

Scheduled Closures

Benson Street closed to pedestrian and through traffic (except for emergency vehicles) between 7th Street and 6th Street throughout the dates/times listed below:

  • Wednesday, August 29 through Friday, August 31, 2018 – 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.
  • Tuesday, September 4 through Friday, September 14, 2018 – 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. each day.

To access the CCIA parking garage from the Benson Street entrance during these times, follow detour signs (see diagram below). All traffic exiting onto Benson Street from the CCIA garage during these times must turn right (towards Broadway). The entrance to the garage on Stevens Street (off of Broadway or MLK Boulevard) will not be impacted.

When NOT CLOSED, Benson Street will be temporarily one-way westbound from 7th to Broadway to allow access to the CCIA garage and to provide ambulance parking along the curb on the Cooper side of Benson Street.

The Kelemen Building circle will remain open for Emergency Department patient parking, transport ambulance parking, and normal employee shuttle operations only. To limit traffic, employees who are transported to work by private vehicle are not permitted to use the Kelemen entrance as a drop-off/pick-up point during this time.

Thank you for your cooperation as we improve our facilities.
