NJ Health Commissioner Dr. Elnahal Presents Medicinal Marijuana Grand Rounds at CMSRU

Shereef M. Elnahal, MD, MBA, NJ Health Commissioner

Cooper Medical School of Rowan University (CMSRU) and Cooper University Health Care will host New Jersey Health Commissioner Dr. Shereef Elnahal for a special Grand Rounds lecture in September to provide medical students, residents, faculty, and other clinicians with an overview of the New Jersey Department of Health’s Medicinal Marijuana Program.

There are currently 22,462 patients, 650 physicians, and 1,050 caregivers participating in the New Jersey Medicinal Marijuana Program. The Murphy administration expanded the program this spring to add five new qualifying medical conditions: anxiety, migraines, Tourette syndrome, chronic pain related to musculoskeletal disorders, and chronic pain of visceral origin. Approximately 7,000 patients with these medical conditions are already participating in the program.

Patients can choose from more than 100 different strains available at six dispensaries in Montclair, Woodbridge, Cranbury, Bellmawr, Egg Harbor Township, and Secaucus. Three Alternative Treatment Centers have requested satellite locations.

During the 40-minute lecture, Dr. Elnahal will discuss various medical conditions that are appropriate for treatment with medicinal marijuana as well as the various forms of medicinal marijuana available at New Jersey’s Alternative Treatment Centers.

He will also provide an overview of New Jersey’s Medicinal Marijuana Program and the reforms that have been made under the Murphy administration. In addition to the five new qualifying medical conditions, registration fees have been reduced for patients and caregivers, dispensaries are adding satellite locations, and mobile access is available so patients, caregivers, and physicians can register, make payments, and upload documents on their smart phones and tablets.

This Grand Rounds lecture is open to medical students, residents, fellows, faculty, and other clinicians.
