March 8 to 14, 2020, is Patient Safety Awareness Week.
Despite progress in patient safety, we still have a ways to go before we arrive at zero harm for our patients. This is why we have Patient Safety Awareness Week – to celebrate the progress we’ve made, and acknowledge that we still are on the journey to deliver safe patient care.
We strive each day to create a culture of safety throughout our organization by holding a daily safety huddle. This huddle focuses on safe care delivery – with more than 60 departments participating, holding High Reliability classes that teach error prevention and communication tools, and by encouraging EARS reporting of near misses, potential patient harm, and patient harm. In Just Culture, we want to create an environment in which everyone feels free to report errors as we learn from our mistakes.
During this week, there are several fun activities to help us learn more about patient safety. Cooper’s Patient Safety team will host a Room of Errors, where you can identify all of the safety errors that could affect our patients. Patient safety rounding may take place in your area to encourage you to share your thoughts regarding barriers to safe patient care. There will also be a screening of the documentary “To Err Is Human,” or you can tune into the webcast “Principles for Improving Patient Safety Measurement.”
