On Task

S.T.R.O.N.G.

Cooper, as a member of the New Jersey High Reliability Organization (HRO) collaborative, also known as New Jersey S.T.R.O.N.G., presents the fourth safety behavior tool called On Task, which is a way to emphasize focused attention to detail and being in the moment during our busy day-to-day work activities.

On Task is designed to prevent us from making skill-based errors – those unintended slips and lapses when we perform familiar, routine acts as if we’re on auto-pilot without even thinking. These errors are so simple that we are surprised when we make them. This safety behavior is used to reduce unintentional errors when we’re under time-pressure, distracted, or stressed.

The one error prevention tool that is used for On Task is self-checking using the STAR technique.

STAR is recognized as the best tool for avoiding skill-based errors. Studies have shown that using STAR can reduce your chances of making an unintended mental slip or lapse by more than 10 times!
