{"id":1035,"date":"2018-06-04T22:21:27","date_gmt":"2018-06-04T22:21:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.cooperhealth.org\/ctd\/?p=1035"},"modified":"2018-06-04T22:21:27","modified_gmt":"2018-06-04T22:21:27","slug":"elimination-of-consult-em-codes-in-epic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.cooperhealth.org\/ctd\/2018\/06\/elimination-of-consult-em-codes-in-epic\/","title":{"rendered":"Elimination of Consult E&amp;M Codes in Epic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1037 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.cooperhealth.org\/ctd\/files\/2018\/06\/Capture.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"712\" height=\"202\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.cooperhealth.org\/ctd\/files\/2018\/06\/Capture.png 712w, https:\/\/blogs.cooperhealth.org\/ctd\/files\/2018\/06\/Capture-300x85.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 712px) 100vw, 712px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As you may be aware, most payers no longer recognize or reimburse the consultation code series 99241-99255.\u00a0 This began with Medicare Part B on 1\/1\/2010.\u00a0 Additionally, there are other reasons for eliminating the consult codes which are listed below:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The number of insurance carriers now accepting consult codes is minimal.<\/li>\n<li>By eliminating the consult codes from all EPIC processes, we will be eliminating any billing and potential auditing complications.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Impact<\/u><\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p>An RVU analysis was done and the impact is <strong><u>MINIMAL<\/u><\/strong> to the overall values (less than 1%).\u00a0\u00a0 Please know that in 2010, in conjunction with the elimination of all consultation codes [except telehealth consultations], CMS increased the wRVUs for new and established office visits and for initial hospital and initial nursing facility visits.\u00a0 CMS also increased the incremental work RVUs for the evaluation and management (E\/M) codes that are built into the 10-day and 90-day global surgical codes<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q:\u00a0 I currently use Consult Codes (99241-99255).\u00a0 What do I use starting Monday, June 4<sup>th<\/sup>?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>For inpatient encounters, McKesson will continue to code those encounters (a modifier is used to distinguish the attending physician from other physicians furnishing specialty care).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong><u>For outpatient visits, including observation services, which formerly were \u201cconsults\u201d, the new or established outpatient (99201-99215) series would be selected<\/u><\/strong>.\u00a0 Follow-up visits in the facility setting may be billed as subsequent hospital care visits and subsequent nursing facility care visits as is the current policy.
