{"id":32448,"date":"2022-09-21T09:49:21","date_gmt":"2022-09-21T09:49:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.cooperhealth.org\/ctd\/?p=32448"},"modified":"2022-09-14T12:49:55","modified_gmt":"2022-09-14T12:49:55","slug":"a-note-on-emotional-intelligence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.cooperhealth.org\/ctd\/2022\/09\/a-note-on-emotional-intelligence\/","title":{"rendered":"A note on Emotional Intelligence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Daniel Goleman is widely credited with creating the term \u2018emotional intelligence.\u2019\u00a0His research led him to the conclusion that leaders come in many stripes and sizes, but one constant among effective leaders was this idea of emotional intelligence.\u00a0According to Goleman, the components of\u00a0emotional intelligence are: Self-Awareness; Self-Regulation; Motivation; Empathy; and Social Skill.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>SELF-AWARENESS<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The ability to recognize and understand your moods, emotions, and drives, as well as their effect on others<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>SELF-REGULATION<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The ability to control or redirect disruptive impulses and moods<\/li>\n<li>The propensity to suspend judgment\u2014to think before acting<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>MOTIVATION<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A passion to work for reasons that go beyond money or status<\/li>\n<li>A propensity to pursue goals with energy and persistence<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>EMPATHY<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The ability to understand the emotional makeup of other people<\/li>\n<li>Skill in treating people according to their emotional reactions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>SOCIAL SKILL<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Proficiency in managing relationships and building networks<\/li>\n<li>An ability to find common ground and build rapport<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>(What Makes a Leader, Daniel Goleman, Harvard Business Review, January 2004)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>All these skills are incredibly important for our patient care but also for our relationships and our personal happiness.
