Are You Addicted to Tanning?

Recent studies have demonstrated that individuals can develop physical and/or psychological addiction to sunbathing or use of tanning beds.  Frequent tanners feel compelled to maintain their tanning schedule (similar to smokers and alcoholics).  Recent studies suggest that tanning addicts may become addicted to opioids (endorphins) that are released during tanning.  A 2006 study showed that when frequent tanners took a medication that blocks endorphins they experienced severe withdrawal symptoms similar to heroin addicts.  A 2007 study showed that more than 1 in 10 college students demonstrate symptoms of tanning addiction.  Frequent sun tanning or use of tanning beds greatly increases the risk of skin cancers and melanomas.
