A delay in stroke treatment can have a devastating effect on the chances for recovery.”

The signs and symptoms of stroke include:

Sudden onset weakness or paralysis of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body;

Sudden onset of slurred speech, confusion, trouble speaking or understanding;

Sudden onset of numbness of the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body;

Sudden onset of loss of vision in one or both eyes;

Sudden difficulty walking, dizziness, vertigo, or loss of balance or coordination;

Sudden onset of a severe headache, especially if it is the worst headache ever experienced.

According to the CDC, stroke kills about 140,000 Americans each year—that is 1 out of every 20 deaths—and every year in the United States, more than 800,000 people have a stroke.

There are two types of strokes: ischemic and hemorrhagic. An ischemic stroke occurs when an obstruction within a blood vessel blocks the supply of blood to a certain area in the brain. This type of stroke accounts for approximately 80 percent of all cases. A hemorrhagic stroke occurs when a weakened blood vessel, or an aneurysm, ruptures and spills blood into the brain tissue or around the brain.

Brian T. Jankowitz, MD, Director, Cerebrovascular Program. “Immediate treatment may minimize the long-term effects of a stroke and prevent death.”

As an academic health system, Cooper University Health Care is uniquely equipped to handle even the most complex strokes at all times, including during the COVID-19 pandemic. Cooper was the first hospital in South Jersey to earn the Comprehensive Stroke Center certification from the Joint Commission and the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association.

“This national certification means that we have undergone rigorous scrutiny and met the highest standards for the full spectrum of stroke care, from the speed with which patients receive acute stroke therapies to the appropriateness of post discharge care,” explains Dr. Jovin. “Even at the time when all health care systems are strained to the maximum, Cooper has instituted measures to ensure that the highest level of stroke care is available and provided by stroke experts, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.”

No matter the type of stroke one is having, getting proper treatment as soon as possible within the recommended time window, makes a huge difference in outcomes. The only FDA-approved drug treatment for acute ischemic stroke is tissue plasminogen activator (tPA, also known as IV rtPA, given through an IV in the arm). If administered within 3 hours (and up to 4.5 hours in certain eligible patients), tPA improves the chances of recovering from a stroke.

For the most ominous type of ischemic stroke, which is a one with a blockage of large vessels in the brain, the FDA approved treatment is a procedure done by neurointerventional surgeons. The surgeons remove the blockage by inserting a specifically designed device directly into the blocked vessel in the brain to retrieve the clot. The earlier this procedure is performed, the highest the likelihood of a positive patient outcome. In some patients meeting certain criteria this treatment is approved to be done within a 24-hours of a stroke.

“Restoring blood flow to the brain, whether it’s by using tPA or a surgical intervention, is extremely time sensitive,” says Dr. Jankowitz, “at Cooper, we have a very efficient system to ensure patients are treated quickly, even during this challenging time.”

Please do not ignore any health issues you may have during this period.

Para leer en Español, por favor haga clic aquí The stroke experts at Cooper University Health Care remind us of the importance of knowing—and responding to—the signs and symptoms of stroke, even during a pandemic. “Stroke is a medical emergency,” says Tudor Jovin, MD, Medical Director, Cooper Neurological Institute Chairman and Chief of Neurology. “Do not … [Read more…]

[3

0":"entry","1":"post","2":"publish","3":"author-rmineo","4":"post-10022","6":"format-standard","7":"category-ehealth-connection

May Is Stroke Month: Don’t Ignore the Warning Signs of Stroke - eHealth Connection

<meta property="og:description" content="Para leer en Español, por favor haga clic aquí The stroke experts at Cooper University Health Care remind us of the importance of knowing—and responding to—the signs and symptoms of stroke, even during a pandemic. “Stroke is a medical emergency,” says Tudor Jovin, MD, Medical Director, Cooper Neurological Institute Chairman and Chief of Neurology. “Do not ...
