For patients who suffer from migraines, stress on the mind or body can lead to migraine flair-ups.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFactors such as stress, inadequate nutrition, poor sleep caused by worrying, and the loss of in-person support from friends and family due to physical distancing can trigger migraines,\u201d says Larisa Syrow, MD, neurologist and headache expert. \u201cThere are some steps patients can take at home to help alleviate migraine days.\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Sleep.<\/strong> Even if your work or school schedule is altered, try to maintain a consistent sleep schedule. Try to avoid screens for at least 30 to 60 minutes before bed to lessen the stimulation which can hinder sleep.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Daily stretching.<\/strong> Even for people who have limited physical ability or chronic pain, regular stretching is possible and extremely important. A low impact practice such as chair yoga can be beneficial. Stretching can prevent stiffness, decrease pain, deepen sleep, and reduce anxiety.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Diet.<\/strong> The best diet to improve the immune system and lessen migraine triggers involves a lot of raw fruits, vegetables, leafy greens, and nuts. Foods that have many preservatives, artificial sweeteners, and nitrates may trigger migraines. If you are buying in bulk, choose frozen fruits and vegetables rather than canned, and foods that are in their natural form rather than processed.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hydration.<\/strong> It is recommended to drink at least eight glasses of water a day to be adequately hydrated.
