We must have patience while we navigate the process. Employees and employers alike are eager to return to normal, or at least some semblance of normal, now that most states have lifted the stay-at-home orders. As you head back to your workplace, there are several steps you can take to stay safe and reduce the risk of infection.

“When returning to the workplace, safety starts with your own practices,” says Raquel Nahra, MD, Infectious Diseases Specialist at Cooper University Health Care. “To protect yourself, wear a mask that covers both your mouth and nose, not one or the other; practice proper and frequent handwashing hygiene; and maintain six feet of physical distance from others to prevent yourself from inhaling contaminated air from coughs and sneezes.”

Some additional ways to stay healthy when going back to your workplace include:

Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If you cannot wash your hands with soap and water, you can use hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.

When you touch public surfaces, wash your hands.

Use bleach wipes on frequently touched objects and surfaces in your work area, including keyboards, phones, handrails, and doorknobs.

If possible, avoid using other employees’ phones, desks, offices, or other work tools and equipment. If it is necessary to share, clean and disinfect the shared items before and after use.

Avoid physical contact such as handshakes or hugs.

Stay home if you are sick, except to get medical care.

Inform your supervisor if you have a sick family member at home with COVID-19.

Follow the policies and procedures of your employer as related to illness, cleaning and disinfecting, work meetings, and travel.

You may experience a variety of emotions upon returning to work, which is normal.

“Engage in proactive, not reactive, coping,” says Philip J. Fizur, PsyD, a clinical health psychologist at Cooper University Health Care. “Some practical tips for proactive self-care as you return to work: Don’t work through breaks, step away from the desk to snack or get outside. Learn and regularly practice stretching and seated chair exercises – these are good for physical health and to help release tension and, thus, anxiety. Also, practice deep breathing techniques throughout the work day at regular intervals (when you first get to work, at lunch, an hour before day’s end). If you need help, there is an app for that!”

Some additional practical and proactive self-care tips include:

Continue to take care of yourself. Eat well, get plenty of rest and exercise, and spend time with those closest to you.

Seek help if you need to. Talking about your feelings with someone you trust is a healthy way to process this evolving situation. If your feelings are too much to bear, seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Mental health problems—in general and in response to a major event such as the pandemic—are real, diagnosable, and treatable.

If you are a parent, you may have concerns about your children’s well-being when you return to work. Help your children to understand and use proper hygiene practices, and let them talk about their feelings and what is going on as far as the new family schedule. This gives you an opportunity to have a discussion and to reassure them.

Your work routines will be different than they were pre-COVID, just as your work routines were different when you first started working from home or your general routines were if you were furloughed. Rather than judging yourself, remember that you made that adjustment before and so you can make this adjustment, even if it is hard at times. Allow yourself time and patience for that to happen.

Flexibility, honest communication, and adherence to these best practices will help ease your transition to the new normal when returning to work.

For more information about Cooper’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, please visit cooperhealth.org/covid19

Para leer en Español, por favor haga clic aquí Returning to work after a pandemic is new territory for all of us.
