Many people are interested in finding out if they have been infected with COVID-19 for a variety of reasons. An antibody test can help provide that answer, but before you run out to get the test, here is some insight on understanding the pros and cons of doing so.<\/p>\n

When people get infected with an illness, the body responds by producing antibodies. For some infections, those antibodies are protective and help clear the infection and prevent you from getting re-infected. In other infections, the body makes antibodies, but doesn\u2019t control the infection. When you first get infected with a respiratory-type virus, your body initially makes early antibodies called IgM and IgA. As your body\u2019s immune response progresses it produces more mature antibodies called IgG that show up later and are more specific for the type of infection you have.<\/p>\n

It is not known yet if the mature IgG antibodies provide immunity to COVID-19 patients and if you won\u2019t get infected again. IgG antibodies are a good marker, but it\u2019s possible that the COVID-19 virus may evolve over time the way the flu evolves, making it possible that the antibodies might not be helpful six months or a year from now. Therefore, an antibody test with a positive result can\u2019t be used as an \u201cimmunity passport.\u201d Until more research is done, you should still take proper precautions to prevent further spread of the virus if you receive a positive COVID-19 antibody test result.<\/p>\n

No test is perfect and there are some people who have antibodies who may not have had COVID-19. But, most of the time, if you have the IgG antibodies then you\u2019ve had COVID-19. The IgG antibodies typically show up in 14 days when approximately 60% to 70% of people who have been infected have antibodies, and by about three weeks, 90% of people have antibodies.<\/p>\n

Antibody testing is helpful for convalescent plasma therapy using blood of COVID-19 survivors who have a very large amount of antibodies to help treat others with severe COVID-19.<\/p>\n

To date there is not enough data to support using antibody testing to determine whether or not a person has immunity to COVID-19. However, the test might used by the Department of Health to determine how many people have been infected by COVID-19. Until further research is completed, Cooper is not offering the antibody test to patients unless it is necessary to determine the correct course of treatment in specific cases.<\/p>\n
