Your organs need oxygen to stay healthy and function properly. Low oxygen levels can cause a variety of problems. Some of these are mild, such as headaches and shortness of breath. In severe cases, however, low oxygen levels can affect heart and brain function.

An easy way to measure your oxygen level is with a pulse oximeter, a small device that fits on the tip of your finger. These devices are readily available in physician offices and have become a useful tool for home use since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Why It’s Important to Monitor Your Blood Oxygen Level

A pulse oximeter is essential for patients who have COVID-19 and are well enough to manage their illness at home, according to Phillip Koren, MD, Associate Chief Medical Officer at Cooper University Health Care and lead cardiologist with Cardiac Partners at Cooper and Inspira.

“We started seeing patients with mild cases of COVID who were still feeling and doing well. However, in some cases, these patients would have low oxygen saturation levels, which means their health was heading in the wrong direction, necessitating immediate medical attention. Monitoring oxygen levels at home during COVID illness and reporting them to the primary care physician allows a patient’s treatment plan to be adjusted to help avoid a sudden decline and the need for hospitalization,” explains Dr. Koren.

Using a Pulse Oximeter Correctly

A pulse oximeter uses light to measure oxygen saturation, which is the amount of oxygen in the blood. Pulse oximeters are typically clipped onto the pointer finger, although sometimes they are clipped onto a toe or an earlobe. Different sizes are available for children and adults. False nails, painted nails, and cold fingers can lead to an incorrect or false reading. A normal or healthy value is 95 to 100 percent. Values under 90 percent are considered low. If your reading is 90 percent or lower, you should seek medical evaluation or advice from your physician.

When managing COVID-19, knowledge is power. During this time, having a pulse oximeter at your fingertips (no pun intended) and keeping track of your oxygen saturation levels, in concert with your physician, can be a lifesaver.

Purchasing a Pulse Oximeter

Online services such as Amazon and Walmart have a range of pulse oximeters ranging from $15 to $50 that have varying display modes. There are pulse oximeters meant for sports activities only, so be sure to select one that is for medical use. Stores such as Walgreens and CVS also carry pulse oximeters, but check online first to see that they are in stock before making a special trip.

Para leer en Español, por favor haga clic aquí Your blood oxygen level is a measure of how much oxygen your red blood cells are carrying throughout your body.
