Lyme disease<\/a> is the most common tick-borne illness in the U.S. During the summer months, there are up to 10 times more cases of Lyme disease reported than in the winter.<\/p>\n

Lyme disease and COVID-19 both have similar symptoms, such as fever, tiredness, and headache. How can you tell the difference?<\/a> The experts at Cooper can help you.<\/p>\n

\u201cLyme disease can be difficult to diagnose because its symptoms often mimic those of other conditions,\u201d says Raquel Nahra, MD<\/a>, infectious diseases specialist at Cooper University Health Care. \u201cHowever, the primary initial symptom for Lyme disease in the majority of cases is a telltale bulls-eye rash at the site of the bite. This bulls-eye rash is a classic and specific indicator of Lyme disease, not COVID-19.\u201d<\/p>\n

The main symptoms of COVID-19<\/a>, an infectious disease caused by the coronavirus, are cough, fever, and difficulty breathing. You can protect yourself from COVID-19 by washing your hands frequently, avoiding touching your face, wearing a face mask around other people, and practicing physical distancing by avoiding close contact with people who do not live in your household.<\/p>\n

Ticks do not travel very far on their own, but can be transported by deer and other animals from the grassy and woodsy areas where they are most prevalent. \u00a0With more people staying indoors, the tick population may increase in residential neighborhoods as wildlife ventures further out of their natural habitat.<\/p>\n

To protect yourself from Lyme disease, use insect repellent, wear long-sleeved clothing, and frequently check yourself, your children, and your pets for ticks.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe good news is, if you have previously been diagnosed with Lyme disease and it was detected early and treated with antibiotics, you are not at higher risk for contracting COVID-19,\u201d says Dr. Nahra.<\/p>\n
