Early detection of cancer can save your life.<\/p>\n<p>When the coronavirus pandemic became a nationwide emergency, the National Comprehensive Cancer Network recommended postponing screenings to reduce the potential risk of patient exposure to the virus and conserve health system resources.<\/p>\n<p>With physical distancing, masking, and enhanced cleaning and safeguards in place at all Cooper and MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper facilities, it is safe to resume your regular health and wellness visits. Dr. Grana, and the cancer experts at MD Anderson at Cooper, are now encouraging women and men to get back on their cancer screening schedule.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that cancer screenings are extremely important,\u201d says Generosa Grana, MD, Director of MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper, \u201cbut waiting too long can cause a delay in finding cancers early when the cancer is most treatable. Your health is our top priority and we\u2019ve made it safe to return to our offices and hospital. If you are due for a mammogram, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooperhealth.org\/services\/colonoscopy\">colonoscopy<\/a>, Pap test, prostate exam, or lung or skin cancer screening, it\u2019s time to schedule your appointment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor individuals at normal risk, delaying cancer screenings for a few months shouldn\u2019t be a problem,\u201d says Dr. Grana. \u201cHowever, we are concerned that people with no symptoms will skip screenings entirely and when you have no symptoms is exactly when you want to be screened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooperhealth.org\/patients-visitors\/coronavirus-covid-19-information\">Click here<\/a> to learn about the steps we are taking to keep you safe when you come for your visit.<\/p>\n<h2>Cancer Screening Guidelines<\/h2>\n<h3>Breast Cancer<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Women 40 and over should have a clinical exam and mammogram every year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Colorectal Cancer<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Men and women at average risk of colorectal cancer should get a screening colonoscopy every 10 years beginning at age 50. African American men and women should begin regular screening colonoscopies at age 45.<\/li>\n<li>If you choose stool-based tests, like the FIT test, over colonoscopy, MD Anderson at Cooper recommends you get tested every year beginning at age 50. African American men and women should begin screening at age 45.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Cervical Cancer<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Age 21 to 29<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pap test every three years<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Age 30 to 64<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pap test and human papillomavirus (HPV) test every five years, or a Pap test every three years.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Age 65 or older<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You may not need additional exams if you\u2019ve had no unusual Pap or HPV test results in the past 10 years. Discuss this with your doctor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Prostate Cancer<\/h3>\n<p>MD Anderson strongly recommends that men talk to their doctor about the risks and benefits of prostate screening. The prostate cancer screening recommendations below apply to most men.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Age 45<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Discuss screening risks and benefits with a health care provider.<\/li>\n<li>If you choose to be screened, get a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test.<\/li>\n<li>Strongly consider digital rectal exam, if you choose to be screened.<\/li>\n<li>Continue testing as indicated by your previous test results.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Age 75 or older<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Your doctor can help you decide if you should continue screening for prostate cancer.<\/p>\n<p>MD Anderson doesn\u2019t recommend cancer screening for men age 85 or older.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For those at increased risk<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you have a family history of prostate cancer, and\/or if you are African American, you may be at increased risk. Starting at age 40 you should discuss screening risks and benefits with your health care provider and you should have a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test and digital rectal exam.<\/p>\n<h3>Lung Cancer Screening<\/h3>\n<p>People who are eligible for lung cancer screening:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Are 55-77 years of age<\/li>\n<li>Are current smokers, or former smokers who have quit within the past 15 years<\/li>\n<li>Have a smoking history of 30 packs\/year or greater.
