Ear infections are common, especially in toddlers and children. Thankfully, most ear infections don’t cause long-term complications. Symptoms of an ear infection, however, can mimic the symptoms of COVID-19, which can be alarming. Cooper\u2019s infectious diseases expert can help you differentiate the two.<\/p>\n

\u201cEar infections occur when fluid collects behind the ear drum and becomes infected,\u201d says Raquel Nahra, MD, infectious diseases specialist at Cooper University Health Care. \u201cMiddle ear infections<\/a> usually follow a cold, the flu, or an upper respiratory tract infection.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ear infections can be painful, but they are treatable and not contagious. You can usually return to normal activities after the pain and fever subsides. Always practice good hand hygiene and cover your nose and mouth if you cough or sneeze to avoid spreading the cold germs that may be associated with an ear infection.<\/p>\n

COVID-19<\/a> is an infectious disease caused by the coronavirus. Symptoms of COVID-19 include dry cough, fever, and in more severe cases, difficulty breathing. It is possible, but unlikely, to develop fluid buildup in the ear or an ear infection after coronavirus.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can protect yourself from COVID-19 by washing your hands frequently, avoiding touching your face, wearing a face mask, and practicing physical distancing,\u201d says Dr. Nahra. \u201cIf you are experiencing any symptoms of an ear infection, or COVID-19, contact your primary health care provider for an evaluation.\u201d<\/p>\n
