To reduce the spread, CDC recommends that people more than 2 years of age wear masks in public settings when around people outside of their household, especially when other physical distancing measures are difficult to maintain.

As part of New Jersey’s plan to reopen schools, teachers and students will be required to wear face masks. For many parents, getting a child to wear a face mask may feel like an impossible task. Children are fidgety and active, and some children may dislike the sensation of fabric on their face.

Some parents of children with asthma are concerned that wearing a mask can make their child’s breathing issues worse.

“It is very important that children with asthma wear a mask and stick to their maintenance medication to keep their lungs healthy and protected,” said Anna Krol, MD, general pediatrician at Children’s Regional Hospital at Cooper.

“Parents may be pleasantly surprised that most children will be able to wear a mask with a little practice and some positive reinforcement,” said Dr. Krol. “Children can be extremely adaptable. Of course, every child is different, and some children with severe developmental disabilities or sensory issues may have a harder time. This should be discussed individually with their pediatrician.”

For the most part, little ones are more willing to learn new habits than adults, and they follow the lead of their parents and older siblings. Seeing other children, teachers, and administrators with face coverings on while at school will help normalize mask wearing in the classroom.

Here are a few tips on how to help your child prepare for wearing a face mask while at school:

Involve kids in selecting their mask. Children’s masks come in a variety of designs and patterns. Finding a “fun” fabric with their favorite cartoon character or cute pattern can help children be excited to wear the mask.

“When children can make a choice, such as the color of the mask or the pattern, they can get a sense of ownership and control over the situation,” says Dr. Krol.

Integrate masks into play. Have a few masks on hand for children to use while playing, or consider making masks for their dolls or stuffed animals. Do a masks fashion show! There are many creative ways to make masks fun. Doing this can help bring face masks into your child’s everyday world and make them less scary.

Practice mask wearing at home. Start with five-minute increments, working up to 30 minutes. Have your child wear their mask while at home and going about their day. Include some fun activities to make the time they are wearing the mask fun. And do not forget to reward them for the job well done.

Be a mask role model. Wear your own mask during the time your child is wearing theirs, stay positive about wearing your mask and make sure to always wear it while out in public.

“Let them observe you wearing a mask,” says Dr. Krol. “Give them a chance to ask questions about your mask to help them understand why it is important. Explain to them in simple terms that we all wear our masks to protect each other from the virus and that keeping masks on is a way to show kindness to others. Children love super heroes. Help them to feel like a super hero as they keep their masks on to help fight the pandemic.”

To help stop the spread of COVID-19, in addition to wearing face masks children should practice good hand hygiene, cover their coughs and sneezes, and practice physical distancing while outside their homes.

For more COVID-19 resources, click here.
