For those struggling with substance abuse, increased isolation and fear can take a toll on mental health and cause some to turn to alcohol or drugs to cope. In a recent study by The Recovery Village, 81% of mental health professionals said their clients reported an increase in mental health symptoms during the pandemic and 53% reported an increase in substance use.

“Over 80% of clients are more stressed-out than before. That’s one of the leading causes of relapse,” says Don Rogers, Community Outreach Director at The Recovery Village Cherry Hill at Cooper. “People living with addiction face more isolation, fear and anxiety from quarantine, including fear of catching the virus or losing their job. Meanwhile, it’s harder to attend support group meetings or get access to treatment due to social distancing.”

Relying on healthy coping behaviors can help people in recovery avoid relapse. Mental health experts recommend these strategies to cope:

Practice self-care. Start with the basics: getting enough sleep to feel well-rested, eating healthy meals, staying well-hydrated with water, and exercising regularly. Self-care comes in many forms, from enjoying a hobby to pampering yourself with a favorite snack, spending quality time with a loved one or just taking a shower to refresh your day. During stressful times, limiting your time watching the news and engaging with social media can also be an important way to support your own mental health.

Be mindful. Mindfulness activities can be calming and stress-reducing. Meditation, prayer, yoga, deep breathing and stretching are common examples, but repetitive, relaxed activities like adult coloring books, knitting or gardening can boost mindfulness. For many, writing in a journal or writing a letter to a loved one helps them reflect and reset.

Get support from others. Online support group meetings are becoming widely available so that people can continue encouraging and sharing with each other during the pandemic. If you have a sponsor, reaching out to them for regular conversations can help guide you and alleviate stress. Talking with trusted friends and family about your stress or fears is a healthy way for anyone to cope.

If substance use is becoming a problem during this difficult time, it’s okay to ask for help. Inpatient and outpatient rehab treatment for addiction is still available during the pandemic. It can help you or a loved one recover from drugs or alcohol and learn new ways of dealing with life stressors.

“Treatment can be life-saving for people struggling with substance use disorders,” says addiction medicine specialist Kaitlan Baston, MD, MSc, DFASAM, Director of the Cooper Center for Healing and Medical Director of The Recovery Village Cherry Hill at Cooper. Cooper’s Urban Health Institute offers an addiction-disorder clinic in Camden.

“Our walk-in clinic at Cooper offers medication-assisted treatments to help patients get on the road to recovery,” says Dr. Baston. “We’ve adjusted procedures in the clinic to minimize the risk of COVID-19 infection, expanded our telehealth sessions, and we are helping more people every day manage their addiction.”

The Recovery Village Cherry Hill at Cooper has also partnered with Cooper University Health Care to help patients enter long-term recovery from drugs and alcohol. The brand new, cutting-edge facility offers a full continuum of care to address a patient’s substance abuse and co-occurring mental health conditions.

For more information about the Urban Health Institute’s walk-in clinic or drug and alcohol rehab treatment at The Recovery Village Cherry Hill at Cooper, please call 856.890.9449.
