One major risk, often called the &#8220;silent killer,&#8221; is hypertension \u2013 more commonly known as high blood pressure.<\/p>\n<p>Even more concerning is the dramatic rise in hypertension nationwide. A recent study found that a growing percentage of Americans have uncontrolled high blood pressure, a staggering 10% increase in 2017-18, compared to 2013 to 2014, according to the report published by The Journal of the American Medical Association.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany of my patients tell me they \u2018feel fine\u2019 when they are diagnosed with high blood pressure, which is one of the reasons high blood pressure is so dangerous,\u201d says Bennett S. Shenker, MD, Cooper\u2019s Chief and Chair of Family and Community Medicine. \u201cIn fact, most people feel no symptoms at all. The problem is that uncontrolled high blood pressure is a significant risk factor for heart attacks and strokes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A person\u2019s goal blood pressure can vary based on factors such as age and chronic health conditions. But for most people a blood pressure of less than 140\/90 is the target. A good way to regularly monitor how well your blood pressure is controlled is taking readings with a home blood pressure monitoring kit, or regular check-ups at blood pressure stations at places like the supermarket or local drug store.<\/p>\n<p>Following a healthy lifestyle including good dietary choices and regular exercise are both important to controlling high blood pressure or possibly preventing development of high blood pressure in the first place. A diet low in sodium can help to lower blood pressure. While avoiding adding salt to food is a great start, this alone is not enough since many foods are high in sodium. Processed foods are often a culprit and many canned soups are high in sodium. Reading labels and increasing fresh vegetables and lean proteins will give you greater control over the sodium in your diet. Regular exercise also can lower blood pressure, and provides an excellent source of reducing stress.<\/p>\n<p>If you have a diagnosis of high blood pressure, your provider may prescribe medication in addition to diet and exercise recommendations. There are many medications available that are very effective, and your provider will be able to choose a regimen that is right for you.<\/p>\n<p>Receiving an early diagnosis and following a treatment plan to reach your goal blood pressure can lower the risk and improve your overall health. If it has been a while since you have had a blood pressure check (even if you do not have a history of high blood pressure), you should make an appointment with your provider. \u201cFeeling fine\u201d is not the same as being fine.
