Lately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, people are wearing them for longer periods of time during virtual learning and “Zoom” meetings. While they are convenient for hands-free and private listening, improper use can lead to ear problems.

Ears produce wax to protect the ear canal from infection and to help clear out dust and dirt. Wearing earphones for a prolonged period of time can cause wax to be pushed in and obstruct the ear canal leading to hearing loss or infection. Additionally, prolonged noise exposure, especially at loud volumes, can lead to hearing loss and tinnitus (ringing) over time.

“Wireless earphones are often worn for large spans of time, especially now as the COVID-19 pandemic has switched school and work to virtual spaces. Any object that blocks the wax from its natural pathway out of the ear or pushes it in can lead to build up and obstruction,” says Donald Solomon, MD, Director of Pediatric Otolaryngology and Adult Otology at Cooper University Health Care. He recommends that you do not push ear buds too deeply into the ear canals.

“If you block up the ear canal with wax it can cause a temporary hearing deficit as well as trap water after swimming or showering,” continues Dr. Solomon. “This can lead to an ear canal infection which, if left untreated, is painful and has the risk of complications.”

Outer ear infections, often called swimmer’s ear, or otitis externa, occur when the skin of the ear canal becomes inflamed and infected from water trapped behind wax or from the act of trying to remove wax and damaging the skin of the ear canal. Symptoms of swimmer’s ear or otitis externa, include ear pain, ear redness and swelling, fluid draining from the ear(s), fever, and hearing loss.

In many cases of middle and outer ear infections, antibiotics are necessary. It’s important to get treatment for an ear infection. If left untreated, an ear infection can lead to more serious conditions, including infection of the bone around the ear canal, a ruptured eardrum, permanent hearing loss, or problems with speech and language.

Dr. Solomon advises that earphones should be cleaned using alcohol every day to help prevent the spread of bacteria. To properly clean the earphones, dip a cotton swab into isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol and wipe the bud mesh to disinfect and remove any residue that remains. Do not oversaturate the cotton swab with alcohol to avoid ruining the earphone. “It’s important to give your ears a break from earphones so they can clean themselves, so if you do need to use earphones for long periods of time because of virtual school or work, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, try an over-the-ear headphone alternative,” says Dr. Solomon.

The ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialists in the Division of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at Cooper University Health Care are experts in diagnosing and treating ear infections in patients of all ages.
