Symptoms include cough, chest tightness, wheezing, and shortness of breath. A person with asthma may experience one or all of these symptoms when it flares up.<\/p>\n<p>COVID-19 is a viral infection that is transmitted from person to person. It may target the lungs, causing coughing and tightness in the chest, but it also can present in a host of other ways.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDealing with COVID-19 is especially troublesome for anyone who has a pre-existing lung condition like asthma,\u201d said Hussein Kiliddar, MD, a pulmonologist at Cooper University Health Care. \u201cThe two have enough common symptoms for an asthma patient to wonder whether they are having an asthma attack or have contracted the virus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One bit of good news: to date, there is no evidence of increased mortality in asthma patients who contract COVID-19, compared with those who do not have pre-existing conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Patients who contract COVID-19 experience some, but not necessarily all, of the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fever and headache<\/li>\n<li>Gastrointestinal symptoms<\/li>\n<li>Sore throat<\/li>\n<li>Loss of smell and taste<\/li>\n<li>Cough that gets worse and does not respond to asthma medications<\/li>\n<li>Progressive shortness of breath<\/li>\n<li>Blue lips without feeling distress (sometimes referred to as happy hypoxia).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Patients who have asthma also may experience blue lips, but also have difficulty breathing. In asthma patients, this condition can be life-threatening and it requires immediate medical attention.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsthma patients are not more likely than the average person to contract COVID-19,\u201d said Dr. Kiliddar. \u201cBut they will generally have more severe symptoms and possibly a more complicated experience, especially if their asthma is not well controlled.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few precautions that people with asthma can take to protect themselves:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Practice social distancing, wash your hand frequently, and wear a mask<\/li>\n<li>Avoid indoor gatherings<\/li>\n<li>Improve asthma control<\/li>\n<li>Continue asthma treatments<\/li>\n<li>Seek health care early if you experience symptoms that do not improve after you use your controller and rescue inhalers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cSome patients might be tempted to discontinue using inhaled and oral steroids and biologics because they may suppress the immune system, but they should not change their treatment without consulting their physician,\u201d said Dr. Kiliddar.<\/p>\n<p>If a patient with asthma does contract COVID-19, there are steps they need to take to protect others, he said. \u201cPatients must avoid using their nebulizers in public or with people in the room as it can increase the spread of the virus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course, as the saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe best way for asthma patients to avoid the difficulties that a COVID-19 diagnosis can cause is to do everything they can to avoid coming in contact with the virus,\u201d Dr. Kiliddar said. \u201cSecondly, pandemic or not, they should work closely with their doctor to keep their asthma well managed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Click <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooperhealth.org\/services\/asthma\">here<\/a> to learn more about asthma and the advanced services that Cooper University Health Care offers patients living with asthma.<br \/>\n<a name=\"espanol\"><\/a><br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Lo Que las Personas con Asma Deben Saber Sobre COVID-19<\/h2>\n<p>COVID-19 ha hecho la vida un poco m\u00e1s complicada para todos, especialmente para aquellos con afecciones preexistentes, como el asma.<\/p>\n<p>El asma es una enfermedad cr\u00f3nica que hace que las v\u00edas respiratorias se inflamen y se estrechen, lo que dificulta la respiraci\u00f3n de quienes la padecen.
