In fact, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends avoiding large gatherings with friends and family members who do not live in your household.

For those who enjoy the usual holiday bustle, this may be a difficult adjustment. For those who find the holidays stressful, not having to attend or host gatherings may be a welcome relief. Either way, there are ways you can cope with these changes positively, acknowledge old traditions in new but meaningful ways, or even create new traditions.

Accept Your Feelings

When we face external stressors, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, psychologists recommend practicing mindfulness to help to deal with things that are outside of our control. Mindfulness is a mental state that can be achieved by focusing on the present moment while calmly acknowledging and accepting your feelings and thoughts. Prayer is also known to help many individuals deal with stress.

“If you are feeling disheartened this holiday season, you should first let yourself feel whatever emotions are present and reach out for support as best you can,” says Philip J. Fizur, PsyD, Clinical Health Psychologist, Cooper University Healthcare. “Try to stay open to both the pleasant and unpleasant feelings, whatever is there. Rather than immediately rejecting those feelings, you can have a purposeful response, which can lead to improvement in mood.”

Connect With Loved Ones

Even if you cannot travel to see your family or attend large gatherings with your friends this holiday season, you can still stay connected.

Many virtual options are available to help you connect. Consider setting up video chats on one of the many available platforms, watching movies together on Netflix Party, sharing music playlists, or using photo sharing apps. You can also organize a virtual cooking party and cook or share traditional family recipes. You could also consider mailing homemade treats to faraway friends and family. If you stopped sending cards in the past because you were too busy, maybe you can take this opportunity to re-establish that tradition.

If you are feeling particularly lonely or isolated this holiday season, seek out community groups or religious groups in your area. Many have online support groups or classes that can offer companionship and support.

Maintain Healthy Eating Habits

“Holidays can be a time for us to indulge in treats, and the stress from the past year could strengthen our tendencies to do so,” Dr. Fizur explains. “But you can still enjoy yourself while staying healthy.”

According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, people who eat a healthy and balanced breakfast that contains carbs and protein experience fewer cravings throughout the day. Carbs provide energy, and protein helps to keep you feeling full. For a healthy and filling holiday treat, try starting the day with oatmeal with cranberries and a sprinkle of cinnamon.

You should also be sure to hydrate throughout the day. Aim to drink one glass of water each hour you are awake. If you choose to drink alcohol, the CDC recommends drinking in moderation—up to one drink per day for women and two drinks per day for men.

Take It Outdoors

This season, many locales are offering outdoor and drive-through holiday experiences. Instead of indoor gatherings, take a family walk through your neighborhood or drive through your town to enjoy the lights and decorations. Instead of preparing appetizers for a party, decorate a tree in your yard with snacks for birds and other wildlife.

Keep Moving

Although gyms may be closed or open only for limited hours, there are plenty of options for staying active. Moderate exercise can increase the production of endorphins, which are known to help to produce positive feelings and reduce stress.

Examples of moderate exercise include brisk walking, steady bicycling, yoga, weightlifting, light jogging, swimming, and light hiking. There are many virtual exercise classes and apps available. Most people should aim for at least 150 minutes of activity per week.

Manage Your Expectations

Try to accept yourself, your emotions, and the situation. We do not choose our emotions; they arise automatically in response to what we experience. We can, however, choose how we respond. This starts with accepting our emotions, rather than fighting them.

Consider that you may need to let go of your idea of a “perfect” holiday. You may find that celebrating differently can be just as fulfilling. “Once you can become comfortable with feeling negative emotions, you should ask yourself if things are okay as is,” says Dr. Fizur. “Manage your standards and ask yourself: Is the perfect dinner important? Or is it more important to connect with loved ones, no matter how that happens? Remember that the pandemic will not last forever.”

Click here to view mental health resources and apps compiled by the Behavioral Medicine experts at Cooper.

If your emotions feel overwhelming, consider contacting a professional therapist.
