The US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF), which is the nation\u2019s expert panel providing medical guidance and expertise on cancer screening, is considering expanding its recommendation for colorectal cancer screening<\/a> to include all\u00a0individuals starting at\u00a0age 45.\u00a0This is great news.<\/p>\n

Until now, the USPSTF recommendation for individuals at average risk (those without a history of cancer or a family history of colorectal cancer or other hereditary diagnoses)\u00a0has been for colorectal cancer screening (primarily with colonoscopy<\/a>) to start at age 50.<\/p>\n

In recent years, cancer experts and researchers have seen an increasing incidence of colorectal cancer in younger individuals\u00ad\u2014a phenomenon that is not fully explained but likely represents environmental and dietary factors in addition to genetic factors.<\/p>\n

In considering this change, the USPSTF is recognizing that colonoscopies save lives and can save more lives when screening begins at age 45.<\/p>\n

Colon cancer can be a devastating diagnosis, and by the time symptoms develop (which can include weight loss, change in bowel habits, bleeding with bowel movements, anemia, and others), cancer may be found at a later stage.<\/p>\n

Screening tests seek to identify colorectal cancer at an earlier stage<\/a>. Screening tests, such as colonoscopy, seek to identify disease at an earlier stage. With early detection, physicians are able to intervene and increase cure rates.<\/p>\n

Colonoscopy is considered the gold standard for early identification of colon cancer. Colorectal cancer almost always develops from polyps, which are abnormal growths in the colon or rectum. These growths are easily detected during a colonoscopy. All polyps that are found during the colonoscopy are removed before they can develop into cancer. In most cases, colonoscopy is covered by insurance.<\/p>\n

Some people may not have to undergo colonoscopy. Alternative options include tests for blood in the stool (FIT) and stool DNA (Cologuard)\u00ae, both of which can be done at home; barium enema (X-ray); and CT colonoscopy. Your doctor will help you to determine the best test for you.<\/p>\n

Nuevas Recomendaciones de Detecci\u00f3n del C\u00e1ncer de Colon<\/h2>\n
