However, although this sounds like good news, researchers are saying that people who are at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cooperhealth.org\/services\/high-risk-lung-cancer-screening-program\">high risk for lung cancer<\/a> are putting off their screening tests. In some cases, hesitation about seeking preventive health services during the pandemic may ultimately lead to a diagnosis of more advanced lung cancer.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-10917 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.cooperhealth.org\/ehealth\/files\/2021\/01\/Jennifer-M-Burg-MD-web.jpg\" alt=\"Jennifer M. Burg, MD, MS\" width=\"188\" height=\"255\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom delayed dental appointments . . . to\u00a0putting off our routine exams or tests, we have all faced the challenges of getting preventive care during the time of COVID-19,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooperhealth.org\/doctors\/jennifer-burg-md\">Jennifer Burg, MD<\/a>, Thoracic Surgeon at MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCancer experts rely on screening tests such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooperhealth.org\/services\/colonoscopy\">colonoscopies<\/a> [for colon cancer], mammograms [for breast cancer], and low-dose chest CT scans [for lung cancer]\u00a0to catch cancer early, often before any symptoms appear. The earlier we find a cancer, the better the chance of a cure and prolonged survival,\u201d says Dr. Burg. She adds, \u201cThis report is concerning because it shows that the number of new lung cancer diagnoses is 23% lower than expected this year, most likely because fewer people are getting screened for lung cancer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the U.S., but there have been improvements in lung cancer survival in the past few years, thanks to new <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cooperhealth.org\/services\/lung-cancer\/treatment-options\/\">treatment<\/a> options and the adoption of effective <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooperhealth.org\/services\/high-risk-lung-cancer-screening-program#:~:text=Our%20Guidelines%20for%20Lung%20Cancer%20Screening.%20At%20MD,individual%20must:%20Be%2055%20to%2074%20years%20old.\">lung cancer screenings<\/a> (low-dose CT scans)\u00a0for people at high risk. Experts say that that by putting off screening, many people will go undiagnosed and untreated until their cancer has reached an advanced stage, when treatment options may be limited and outcomes are poorer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs with all cancer screenings, the goal of lung cancer screening is to catch cancer early, before it spreads, because early diagnosis can make a huge difference in survival,\u201d says Dr. Burg.
