This sharp decline puts tens of thousands of Americans at risk for delayed or missed diagnosis for this preventable disease.

Colorectal cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death in men and women in the U.S., but it is also highly preventable with a routine colonoscopy screening. A colonoscopy is one of the most effective ways to identify colorectal cancer in its earliest, most treatable stages.

Experts recommend that men and women at average risk begin regular colonoscopy screenings at age 50 and that African American men and women, who are at higher risk, begin screenings at age 45. However, if you have a family history of colon cancer or are considered a high-risk patient, your screenings should begin earlier. Consult with your physician to determine the timing that is right for you.

Many people put off getting a colonoscopy because of fear or anxiety about the process. It’s not the actual procedure that causes concern – you are asleep for that – but it’s the preparation that gets a bad rap.

Although “prep” can be slightly inconvenient, it is a crucial part of the process to ensure a successful colonoscopy.

“Many people avoid a colonoscopy because of embarrassment, fear, or misinformation,” says Daniel Baik, MD, gastroenterologist at Cooper Digestive Health Institute and key member of the multidisciplinary team at MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper. “We make the entire process as easy as possible and remind patients that this procedure can save your life.”

The colonoscopy procedure is brief, taking about 30 minutes. Before the procedure, a sedative is administered, allowing patients to sleep through the entire process. Any abnormal cells, or polyps found during the screening are promptly removed before they can develop into cancer. After your colonoscopy, you may be slightly groggy from the sedative, and you will need to arrange for safe transportation home.

Colonoscopy preparation will begin several days leading up to the procedure, and most of it takes place during the 24 hours before your screening. Your colon must be empty and clean to ensure our physicians can see clearly to detect any abnormalities.

You will receive clear, detailed instructions from your doctor ahead of time so that you know what to do. If you have additional questions throughout the preparation process, your doctor or a nurse will review the details to put you at ease.

Regardless of any unpleasant stories you may have heard, colonoscopy can be a lifesaver. Here are five tips for making your colonoscopy prep more comfortable and more effective.

Cut Back on Fiber
High-fiber foods, such as beans, nuts, whole grains, and raw fruits and vegetables can leave residue in the colon, making it more difficult for the doctor to see polyps. It is best to cut back on high-fiber foods two to three days before your colonoscopy; this will allow for clear visualization of polys. Steer clear of nuts, seeds, popcorn, red meat, fried foods, and raw vegetables. Some good food choices at this time include chicken, salmon, soup, pasta, rice, eggs, and steamed vegetables.

Stock Up on Liquids
The day before a colonoscopy, patients must stick to an all-liquid diet. Stock up on items such as chicken or beef broth, Jell-O, popsicles, water ice, apple juice, flavored sparkling water, 7UP or Sprite, and coffee or tea (without milk or creamer). Drinks containing electrolytes, such as Pedialyte, Gatorade, and Powerade can provide important hydration. Be sure to avoid anything with red, blue, or purple coloring because they can stain the wall of your colon, and your doctor might mistake it for blood in your colon.

Drink the Prep Cold
There are a variety of prep solutions available. Your doctor will prescribe the one that’s best for you. Before your procedure, you will receive detailed instructions, but most prep solutions require drinking 64 to 128 ounces of liquid to allow the prep to cleanse the colon completely. To improve the taste, you can dissolve the prep solution in any clear liquid, such as Gatorade, lemonade, or apple juice. Many people find it easier to drink the colon-cleansing formula cold and through a straw.

Stay Close to the Bathroom
Once the prep solution begins to work, bowel movements can occur suddenly; you will want to stay close to the bathroom. Make sure that you have the time and privacy you need to make the process as comfortable as possible. You may want to have soft/gentle toilet paper, wet wipes, and Vaseline on hand to help prevent or soothe irritation. It’s a good idea to wear loose clothing or pants with an elastic waistband to avoid fumbling with buttons or zippers while you make frequent bathroom trips.

Relax and Take it All in Stride
After a colonoscopy, many people have a good meal and then enjoy a long nap. You won’t be able to drive or work after the procedure, so plan to take it easy for the rest of the day and you can rest easy knowing you took an important step in preventing colorectal cancer.

Colorectal cancer is one of the few preventable cancers.
