Distributing the vaccine, however, will take some time. This potentially means a few more months of virtual learning.<\/p>\n<p>Many schools in the area have transitioned to 100% virtual learning, or a hybrid model, with some days spent virtually and some days spent in the classroom. Between learning online and the ongoing need for self-isolation because of the COVID-19 pandemic, school-aged children are spending anywhere from six to eight hours a day on their devices.<\/p>\n<p>Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommended:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>No screen time for children younger than 2.<\/li>\n<li>Only one hour of screen time per day for children ages 2 to 10.<\/li>\n<li>Only two hours of screen time per day for children ages 11 to 13.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cWith the introduction of virtual learning to help stop the spread of COVID-19 at the community level, the old AAP recommendations are no longer feasible,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooperhealth.org\/doctors\/april-douglass-bright-md\">April M. Douglass-Bright, MD<\/a>, Division Head, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooperhealth.org\/services\/general-pediatrics\">General Pediatrics at Cooper<\/a>. \u201cThe AAP has recently released guidance for parents on how to manage the new normal. These recommendations do not include strict limitations on screen time, but rather offer parents the flexibility to create a daily plan that works best for their situation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A typical family schedule should include screen-free activities during set times in the mornings and afternoons. These activities can include reading, arts and crafts, or exercise. As always, the CDC and the AAP recommend that kids get 60 minutes of exercise a day.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthychildren.org\/English\/media\/Pages\/default.aspx\"><strong>Click here<\/strong><\/a> to visit the AAP website for help in creating a media plan for your family.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe AAP recommends parents focus less on the amount of extra screen time right now and more on the idea of keeping media use positive and following a daily routine,\u201d says Dr. Douglass-Bright. \u201cLet your kids be involved in planning a daily schedule and setting screen time expectations. This will increase the likelihood of acceptance by all family members and make any changes easy to put in place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Here are some strategies to help you manage screen time and establish a daily schedule:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Create a daily family schedule that includes following a set wake-up time, eating breakfast, and changing into a new outfit for the day. Follow your normal pre-pandemic bedtime routines as much as possible during the week to make sure that you and your children are getting enough sleep.<\/li>\n<li>Within the virtual day, try to schedule breaks from looking at a screen. These breaks allow time to get a nutritious snack, read a book, or a take quick walk around the block. For younger children, the AAP recommends completing 20 minutes of class assignments followed by a 10-minute break.<\/li>\n<li>You may want to ask your child\u2019s teachers to suggest additional offline assignments or to recommend safe and educational online activities or apps that your kids can use in their free time.<\/li>\n<li>Use social media as an outlet for positive connections. You can check in with loved ones, friends, and neighbors who you might not be able to see right now.<\/li>\n<li>Screen time should never get in the way of sleep, physical activity, reading, or family time. Make a plan for how much non-school screen time your kids can expect each day.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cFamilies are in the middle of an extremely challenging time right now,\u201d says Dr. Douglass-Bright. \u201cReevaluate your weekly schedule and screen time expectations to confirm that they are still working for everyone.
