Some medications are only available by prescription. Most recommended treatments, however, are available at your local drug store, without a prescription. These include nasal sprays, antihistamines, and decongestants.

Allergy shots (immunotherapy) can be used for people with allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis (eye reaction), or allergy-triggered asthma. Because it can take six to 18 months for allergy shots to become effective, you may need to take allergy medications in the meantime.

Make the Season More Enjoyable by Following These Steps

Inside Your Home

Do a thorough spring cleaning. Throughout the winter, windows, bookshelves, and air conditioning vents collect dust and mold that can lead to allergy symptoms.

Shut windows on days when pollen counts are high and avoid opening windows or using fans that may draw pollen inside.

Keep pets off the bed and do not allow them to sleep with you at night, as pollen can cling to their paws and fur.

When You Go Outside

Check local pollen counts before going outside and plan your activities to avoid times when pollen counts are highest, which is usually between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. High pollen counts can vary depending on weather conditions and location. Most weather apps list pollen levels and some even break them down by the worst offenders (tree, grass, ragweed, etc.).

Wear a hat to cover your head and protect your hair from pollen. You can also wear sunglasses to protect your eyes. Consider wearing a face mask, especially while gardening or mowing the lawn.

Take a shower and change clothes when you come inside to wash off any pollen that may have stuck to your skin or clothing.

When to Talk to a Doctor

“If you find that at-home remedies or over-the-counter medications are not helping, or if you get sinus infections, headaches, or ear infections on top of seasonal allergies, it might be time to consult with an allergist,” Dr. Lania says. “They can help figure out what you are allergic to and teach you how to avoid your allergy triggers.”

To learn more about managing your seasonal allergies, download our free e-book, which offers tips on allergy testing, treatments, and prevention.

If you are suffering from seasonal allergies, make an appointment with a Cooper allergy specialist by calling 800.8.COOPER (800.826.6737) or using our online form.

Consejos de expertos para sobrevivir a las alergias primaverales

A medida que el clima se calienta y las flores y los árboles comienzan a florecer, muchos de nosotros estamos emocionados de pasar tiempo al aire libre.
