Well over half of all adults in the US have received at least one dose of vaccine, and that number grows every day. That’s good news, but we still have quite a way to go before we reach herd immunity and get back to “normal.”

Recently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) revised their COVID-19 safety guidelines related to masking for people who are fully vaccinated. These revised guidelines, which can offer some welcome relief and help us to get closer to normalcy, state that it is now safe for those who are fully vaccinated to:

Skip wearing a mask outside, unless you are in a crowded area or in some venues.

Visit with other fully vaccinated people—without wearing a mask or social distancing.

Spend time with unvaccinated people from one household who are at low risk for severe COVID-19—without wearing a mask or social distancing.

Forgo testing before domestic or international travel or testing/quarantining after travel—unless it is required by the destination to which you are traveling.

The CDC recommends that you continue to take the following precautions, even after vaccination:

Wear a mask and continue to practice physical distancing while in indoor public settings.

Wear a mask when indoors with people who are not vaccinated or who are in a high-risk category.

Avoid large gatherings that are held indoors.

“Continuing to take precautions will help further curb the spread of the virus and protect those who are at the greatest risk for severe COVID-19 disease,” says Henry S. Fraimow, MD, an epidemiologist with Cooper University Health Care.

“Even if you are vaccinated, you can still have a mild or asymptomatic COVID-19 infection and potentially transmit that infection to someone who may get seriously ill,” Dr. Fraimow says.

When it comes to events and activities, Dr. Fraimow emphasizes that outdoor events are always safer than indoor events because the risk of transmission outside is significantly lower than inside. However, the number of people and how close together they are outside will affect this risk.

“The rule of thumb right now is the smaller, the better, and outdoor activities are preferred over indoor ones,” Dr. Fraimow says. “If it’s an indoor gathering, you should keep the group relatively small—even if everyone is vaccinated.”

Although the CDC provides general guidance on holding medium and large events, he adds that each state has its own limitations on gathering size based on infection rates in a particular community.

There is light at the end of the COVID-19 tunnel—and vaccines are a big part of that—but we need to proceed thoughtfully, according to Dr. Fraimow. “We are all a bit itchy after more than a year of COVID and all of the restrictions we have had to deal with,” he says. “But we need to recognize that, even vaccinated, we are still at risk of spreading the virus to others, so we need to continue to take some precautions.”

For the latest updates on COVID-19 from Cooper University Health Care, click here.

Estoy Vacunado.
