A delay in treatment can have a devastating effect on the chances for recovery.”

The signs and symptoms of stroke include sudden onset of the following:

Weakness or paralysis of the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body.

Slurred speech, confusion, trouble speaking, or understanding speech.

Numbness of the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body.

Loss of vision in one or both eyes.

Difficulty walking, dizziness, vertigo, or loss of balance or coordination.

Severe headache, especially if it is the worst headache ever experienced.

According to the CDC, each year, more than 750,000 people in the United States have a stroke. Stroke kills about 150,000 Americans annually, making it the fifth leading cause of death in the country. If you or a loved one shows any of the above signs of stroke, you should call 911 immediately, and note the time the symptoms started. Do not let that person go to sleep, and do not give them medication, food, or drinks.

“If you are having a stroke, it’s critical that you get medical attention right away,” says Dr. Jovin. “Immediate treatment may minimize the long-term effects of a stroke and prevent death.”

There are two types of stroke:

Ischemic stroke occurs when an obstruction within a blood vessel blocks the supply of blood to an area in the brain. This type of stroke accounts for approximately 80 percent of all cases.

Hemorrhagic stroke occurs when a weakened blood vessel, or aneurysm, ruptures and blood spills into the brain tissue or the area around the brain.

As the leading academic health system in the region, Cooper is uniquely equipped to always handle the most complex strokes. Cooper was the first hospital in South Jersey to earn the Comprehensive Stroke Center certification from The Joint Commission and the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association.

“This certification means that we have undergone rigorous scrutiny and met the highest standards for the full spectrum of stroke care, from the speed with which patients receive acute stroke therapies to the appropriateness of post-discharge care,” explains Dr. Jovin. “Cooper has instituted measures to ensure that the highest level of stroke care is available and provided by stroke experts, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.”

No matter the type of stroke, getting proper treatment fast makes a huge difference in outcomes. The medications alteplase (tPA) and Tenecteplase (TNK), known as a thrombolytics, are used to break up blood clots in the brain. If given within three hours of the stroke event (and up to 4.5 hours in certain eligible patients), these medications can improve the chances of recovering from a stroke.

For the most dangerous type of ischemic stroke, one where there is a blockage of a large vessel in the brain, the most effective treatment is a thrombectomy—removal of the obstruction through a minimally invasive surgical procedure. The sooner this procedure is performed, the higher the likelihood of a good patient outcome. For some patients, this treatment can be performed up to 24 hours from the onset of stroke symptoms.

“Restoring blood flow to the brain, whether it’s by using thrombolytic medication or a surgical intervention, is extremely time sensitive.” says Dr. Jovin, “At Cooper, we have a very efficient system to evaluate and treat patients quickly.
