It is projected that one in five Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer in their lifetime.

Dawn E. Topper, MSN, FNP-BC, NP-C, an advanced practice provider at Cooper University Health Care, who cares for patients of all ages, has a special interest in skin cancer prevention. During routine exams with her patients, Dawn uses her expertise to check moles, wounds that are not healing properly, sunspots from previous sunburns, and unusual changes in skin for signs of cancer

“Not every lesion turns out to be cancer,” Dawn says. “But I will refer patients who have any suspicious changes in their skin to a dermatologist for further evaluation.”

While it is important to regularly check obvious areas that are exposed to the sun – like the face, back, chest, arms, and legs – Dawn also recommends paying attention to areas of the body you may not think to check for skin changes. These areas include your eyelids, buttocks, and between your toes.

Dawn also offers the following skin cancer prevention tips:

Use a sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher.

Apply sunscreen 15 minutes before going into the sun and be sure to reapply regularly. Spray sunscreens are popular because they are easy to apply, but for better sun protection, it’s best to use a rub-on lotion. Whichever you choose, make sure the product has the proper level of UVA and UVB protection.

Apply sunscreen to all areas of your body exposed to the sun. Make sure to apply to often overlooked areas like the top of your head, ears, and feet.

Don’t forget your lips. Use a lip balm that has adequate UVA and UVB protection.

Don’t skip sunscreen on a cloudy day. UV rays penetrate the clouds and you can still get a sunburn.

Be especially careful when in or around the water. UV rays bounce off of the water’s reflective surface. Remember to reapply sunscreen after spending time in the water.

Wear sunscreen even if you have a dark complexion or tan easily. Everyone is susceptible to skin cancer, though it can look different on different skin tones.

While sunscreens are great, the best way to protect yourself from the sun’s harmful rays is to stay in the shade. If going out, wear light-weight clothing that covers your arms and legs and top it off with a wide-brimmed hat.

You’ve heard this before but it bears repeating – there’s no such thing as safe indoor tanning. Tanning beds can be more harmful than the sun and increase your risk for skin cancer and prematurely age your skin. If you are looking for a sun-kissed glow, there are plenty of sunless tanning lotions, sprays and other options on the market.

“Despite your best efforts to protect your skin, if you do get a sunburn, drink plenty of fluids, take a cool shower or bath, and moisturize your skin to help with discomfort and recovery,” Dawn says. “However, call your doctor if you experience severe sunburn with blisters covering a large portion of your body.”

There are many benefits to being out in the sunshine. The sun provides a natural source of vitamin D, can boost your mood, help you sleep, and reduce stress. Moderate doses of sunlight, between 5 to 15 minutes – and up to 30 minutes if you have dark skin – can be beneficial. You must, however, be careful to protect your skin from too much sun.

When it comes to the sun, be smart, be safe, and when you will be in the sun for an extended period always wear sunscreen!

For an appointment with a Cooper primary care provider, please call 800.8.COOPER (800.826.6737) or use our online appointment request form.
