Men are faced with unique health risks, including sexual and urinary issues, cardiovascular concerns, and cancer. With a strong foundation and a commitment to health, all men can improve their health, no matter what their age or current health status.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-11232 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.cooperhealth.org\/ehealth\/files\/2021\/06\/Screening-Chart.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"416\" height=\"542\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.cooperhealth.org\/ehealth\/files\/2021\/06\/Screening-Chart.png 416w, https:\/\/blogs.cooperhealth.org\/ehealth\/files\/2021\/06\/Screening-Chart-230x300.png 230w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 416px) 100vw, 416px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Start With Primary Care<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Even healthy men should have an annual visit with a primary care doctor to stay on top of their wellness. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooperhealth.org\/services\/primary-care-family-medicine-and-internal-medicine\">Primary care<\/a> physicians monitor overall health and well-being and recommend age-appropriate preventive services. These can include screening tests for common conditions, such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. If screening shows a potential issue, the doctor may order more tests, start a treatment plan, or make a referral to the appropriate specialist.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe conversation between doctor and patient is often the most important part of the routine visit,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooperhealth.org\/doctors\/daniel-hyman-do\">Daniel J. Hyman, DO<\/a>, Medical Director, Population Health and Primary Care at Cooper University Health Care. \u201cWe discuss what\u2019s bothering them\u2014whether it\u2019s knee pain, heart symptoms, obesity, sexual difficulties, or other concerns\u2014and I make recommendations for follow-up care as needed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Protecting Sexual and Urinary Health<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Men can face a variety of urologic issues, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Erectile dysfunction (ED)\u2014difficulty getting or keeping an erection<\/li>\n<li>Low testosterone level<\/li>\n<li>Prostate diseases, such as enlarged prostate, infection, or cancer<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cED can have several possible causes, which may be linked to other health issues. It\u2019s very important for men with ED to get tested for any potential underlying problems,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooperhealth.org\/doctors\/allen-seftel-md\">Allen D. Seftel, MD<\/a>, Head of Cooper\u2019s Division of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooperhealth.org\/services\/urology\">Urology<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In men younger than 40, ED is often triggered by diabetes, which can damage the nerves and blood vessels that enable erections. In older men, ED can be a sign of clogged blood vessels, which can lead to a heart attack or stroke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLow testosterone, which can naturally start around age 40, may also cause ED. In such cases, a healthier lifestyle can work wonders,\u201d says Dr. Seftel, \u201cLosing excess weight, exercising regularly, eating a heart-healthy diet, and quitting smoking can reverse some cases of ED and low testosterone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Prostate cancer, the second most common form of cancer among men, can often be treated successfully if found early. However, men should discuss the pros and cons of screening for prostate cancer with their doctor. If a man chooses to be screened, he should start having regular prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood tests at age 50. Screenings should start earlier for African-American men and those with a close relative who had prostate cancer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Safeguarding Heart Health<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Heart disease is the number one killer among men, causing one in every four deaths, often with no previous symptoms. The good news is that men can protect their heart health by taking these steps:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Adopt a heart-healthy lifestyle, including 45 minutes of walking most days, a balanced diet, loss of excess weight, no smoking, and limited alcohol.<\/li>\n<li>Men who have risk factors for heart disease\u2014such as diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol, and smoking\u2014should see a primary care physician or cardiologist for regular screenings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If heart medication interferes with sexual activity, it\u2019s important to speak up, advises <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooperhealth.org\/doctors\/fredric-ginsberg-md\">Fredric L. Ginsberg, MD<\/a>, Co-Director, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardiacpartners.org\/\">Cardiac Partners<\/a>, and Co-Medical Director, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooperhealth.org\/services\/cardiology\">Cooper Heart Institute<\/a>. \u201cDifferent medications can be substituted that won\u2019t cause erectile dysfunction,\u201d says Dr. Ginsberg. \u201cMen shouldn\u2019t just stop taking heart medicine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Men with heart disease can usually be treated effectively enough to safely enjoy sex and other physical activities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cooper primary care physicians, urologists, and cardiologists have offices throughout South Jersey.
