You have a primary care physician, you get regular blood work, and you never miss your annual mammogram appointment. However, maybe you suddenly notice some swelling, tenderness, or lump on your breast. Don’t panic.

After speaking with your primary care doctor, he or she may recommend that you see a breast surgeon – and your first thought is cancer. If you find yourself in this situation, I urge you to take a deep breath and know that there are times you might need to see a breast surgeon and it doesn’t involve cancer.

Here are five non-cancer-related reasons you may need to see a breast surgeon:

#1 – A Non-Cancerous Breast Lump

Benign (non-cancerous) breast masses or lumps are very common. Two of the most common types of benign breast lumps are fibroadenomas and cysts. Fibroadenomas are usually painless, occur most often in women ages 15 to 35, and can be monitored with imaging and exams. However, fibroadenomas can grow in size, and if they continue to grow or cause pain, we may recommend removal. Cysts are sacs in the breast filled with fluid. These can also grow large enough that they cause pain and need to be drained. If they need repeated draining, surgery may be a treatment option.

#2 – Breast Infection

Breast infections can occur anywhere in the breast. They can be as simple as some redness and swelling or more complicated abscesses causing fever and severe pain. Most breast infections are treated with antibiotics, but if an infection progresses to an abscess, a breast surgeon may need to perform a drainage procedure. More complicated infections require long-term follow-up. One thing to note: if you are experiencing symptoms such as breast swelling, purple or red color of the skin, and dimpling or thickening of the skin of the breast that resembles and feels like an orange peel, please call your doctor immediately. They could be signs of inflammatory breast cancer, an aggressive form of breast cancer that requires immediate attention.

#3 – Abnormal Mammogram

Getting a call that your annual screening mammogram is abnormal is fairly common, and it does not always indicate cancer. An abnormality just means your doctor has found something that needs a closer look. When you need imaging more frequently than your yearly screening, your primary provider may refer you to a breast surgeon to ensure you are receiving adequate clinical breast exams and getting the appropriate diagnostic imaging.

#4 – High Risk for Cancer

No one knows if or when breast cancer will develop, but certain risk factors are strongly linked to the disease. If multiple family members have been diagnosed with breast cancer, you may be considered high risk. Genetic testing can also determine your risk. Body and lifestyle traits such as obesity, high breast density, or heavy drinking could also put you at increased risk. If you have been identified as being at high risk for breast cancer, your primary care provider may refer you to a breast surgeon for your regular breast cancer screenings.

#5 – Nipple Discharge

Nipple discharge is common in women of different ages and stages in life. Discharge may simply be a sign of a change in hormones or an indication of a non-cancerous mass that may need to be removed. Your doctor will use lab work and imaging to try and find a cause. If appropriate, surgery can be planned to treat nipple discharge.

As a breast surgeon at MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper, I mostly see patients who have cancer that requires treatment. However, it’s important to become familiar with non-cancerous breast conditions that may lead you to see a breast surgeon. None of these are cause for panic.

At MD Anderson at Cooper, we take our time with each patient to address all questions and concerns, and work together to find appropriate treatments. Don’t let “what ifs” prevent you from getting your regular screening or talking to a physician when you are experiencing a problem. Continue to have regular mammograms and perform breast self-exams monthly at home. If you notice anything abnormal, contact your primary care provider and don’t delay making an appointment if they recommend you to a breast surgeon. You are in good hands.

Teralyn Carter, MD is a breast surgeon at MD Anderson at Cooper and sees patients in Camden and Willingboro, NJ.

To learn more about MD Anderson at Cooper and our advanced treatment options for patients with cancer visit MDAndersonCooper.org. No tenga pánico.
