Unfortunately, the delta variant of COVID-19 is infecting large numbers of people across the nation, mostly among those who are unvaccinated. How should you react to this news?

To get the latest information on COVID-19 and the variants, we posed some frequently asked questions to Henry S. Fraimow, MD, Epidemiologist and Infectious Disease Specialist at Cooper University Health Care.

A virus variant, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), happens when viruses “change through mutation” as they replicate. The changes are common and expected to occur.

How are virus variants discovered?

Currently, the only way to find variants is by looking at the virus strain found in a person who has had a recent positive COVID-19 test. Scientists examine the nucleic acid sequence of the virus to identify any differences from the original COVID-19 strain. An effort is underway to examine the virus strain in as many COVID-19-positive individuals as possible to track how many people have a variant strain.

How many virus variants are there?

Right now in the U.S., there are dozens of virus variants. Most of these are not cause for concern because they do not behave differently than the original COVID-19 virus. All of the variants generally cause the same symptoms, but some spread faster.

How concerned should we be about COVID-19 variants?

Although most of the variants discovered to date are no more dangerous than the original COVID-19 strain, some can be a bit worrying. The new virus strains we are concerned about show changes in specific regions of the nucleic acid of the virus particles. Changes in certain parts of the virus, especially on the spike protein that attaches to human cells, can raise red flags for researchers.

Researchers have identified five variants currently circulating in the U.S. that show these changes to the spike protein. This list includes the delta variant. These changes cause variants to behave differently from the original strain, making them more transmissible, as is the case with the delta variant. Variants have the potential to be more lethal, but this has not been the case with any current variants of COVID-19.

Should we be concerned about the delta variant?

The delta variant is currently the most transmissible variant found across the U.S., accounting for 83% of new U.S. COVID-19 cases, according to the CDC. This variant has a 50% greater transmission rate than the first variant found, which explains its rapid spread.

If you are fully vaccinated, you should not be too concerned. The antibodies from current vaccines are very effective in protecting you from infection. The vaccines are not 100% effective, but most people who are vaccinated will not get very sick should they become infected. However, because this variant is so easily transmitted, it is dangerous for unvaccinated individuals in communities with a low vaccination rate because it could spread quickly throughout those communities.

Do the available vaccines provide the same level of protection against variants?

All three of the vaccines that have Emergency Use Authorization from the US. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) have been found to be highly effective in preventing infection from COVID-19 and the current variants, which include the Pfizer-BioNTech (two shots), Moderna (two shots), and Janssen J & J (one shot). While it is still possible to be infected after vaccination, the evidence shows that all of the vaccines are effective in preventing severe illness, hospitalization, and death.

Vaccination remains the most effective way you can prevent being infected, being hospitalized, or dying from COVID-19.

For the latest updates on COVID-19 from Cooper University Health Care, click here.

Para leer en Español, por favor haga clic aquí We all want to move past COVID-19 and get back to normal life.
