In addition to the normal back-to-school anxiety that some children experience, there may be an added layer of concern due to COVID-19.

“It’s normal for children to have a minor case of the jitters during the weeks preceding the start of school,” says Cooper psychologist Richard Selznick, PhD, Director of the Cooper Learning Center. “That anxiety may intensify as kids move from the safety of their family bubble into a far larger world. Children may have worries that they are not able to articulate easily.”

If your child is exhibiting anxiety about returning to school or if you think they may have trouble adjusting, here are a few strategies to consider.

Meet Them Where They Are

As a first step, Dr. Selznick emphasizes that it is important to recognize and validate their feelings. Younger children and those with special needs may not be able to explain the emotions they are experiencing, so it’s up to you to look for red flags, such as:

Crying

Irritability

Trouble falling or staying asleep

Saying “I can’t do it” without a reason

Suddenly avoiding all social interaction

Constantly asking questions, such as “What if?” “Is someone going to die?” or “Are you coming back?”

Fear of making minor mistakes

Onset of wetting the bed

Making statements such as, “I know you are worried,” can help to validate their feelings.

Monitor Social Media

Teens, tweens, and many adults are constantly exposed to information on social media that may not be accurate. “Direct your child toward trusted sources, and help them recognize the difference between legitimate news and what they have picked up on places like YouTube or TikTok,” says Dr. Selznick.

Set the Tone

Kids look to their parents, teachers, and other adults for clues on how to react. “While it is okay to share your own concerns, try to do so calmly, and use the opportunity to share coping skills,” says Dr. Selznick. If your child asks a question and you don’t know the answer, take it in stride. Consider a response such as, “That’s a good question. I’m going to get the answer so we both understand.”

Teach Them the Concepts of Mindfulness

Mindfulness is based on the practice of being open and aware in the present moment, suspending judgment, and keeping the mind from wandering. By having children close their eyes, take a few deep breaths, and ignore distractions, even for a minute, you can teach them how to calm themselves down when they start feeling anxious, angry, or frustrated. Mindfulness activities are also great for children and parents/caregivers to practice together.

Establish a New Routine

A couple of weeks before school begins, start children on a schedule with set bedtimes, wake-up times, and mealtimes to help them to adjust to greater structure. “Build a morning routine that feels comfortable,” says Dr. Selznick. “You may want to schedule a few minutes for your child to participate in their favorite quiet activity, like reading or coloring, to set an atmosphere of calm.”

Talk With Your Child’s Teacher

Speak with your child’s teacher or a school administrator to get an idea of what you and your child should expect, including:

What will drop-off look like?

How will the day be structured?

What changes will be made in the classroom?

Accentuate the Positive

Ask your child to talk about what they like about school and what they missed while they were at home. However, don’t make school the dominant topic of conversation. You may also want to organize playdates with small groups of your child’s classmates to help break the ice and create positive anticipation about returning to school.

“Children are innately social. While they may have grown accustomed to virtual learning and Zoom playdates, it’s not their preferred method of interacting with the world,” says Dr. Selznick. “Once they get back into the swing of being in person, they will enjoy it. That transition will take place sooner if we work to relieve our children’s fears before that first school bell rings.”

Parents, Trust Your “Gut”

Something that Dr. Selznick asks a great deal of the parents of the children he assesses is, “What’s your mom (or dad) gut telling you?” In other words, if you think the worries are more than your child can handle and he or she is getting overwhelmed more often, you may want to seek more professional advice.

Cooper primary care physicians and pediatricians have offices throughout South Jersey.
