More women are openly discussing their experiences, and younger women want to know what to expect.

Menopause, which technically begins once a woman has not had a menstrual period for a year, on average at age 51, is a natural process. It’s part of life, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. As many as 85% of women experience menopause-related symptoms. Most common are hot flashes, weight gain, trouble sleeping, mood swings, and vaginal dryness.

The good news? There are proven ways to take the edge off of menopause safely and effectively. Here are a few tips that may help:

Avoid common trigger foods—but just as importantly, figure out yours

Caffeine, alcohol, and sugary or spicy foods, especially if consumed before bed, can worsen symptoms related to menopause. Avoid them when you can, but don’t stop there. As you approach menopause, keep a food journal. Write down everything you eat and drink, and record how you feel and any physical responses that you notice, such as bloating, mood swings, or hot flashes. Foods that affect one woman, or even most women, might not affect you, and vice versa.

Prepare for vaginal dryness

Estrogen levels begin to decrease during perimenopause, the transition years leading up to the end of menstruation. The decrease in estrogen levels can make vaginal tissue thinner and more easily irritated. Sometimes women experience dryness that can make sex painful.

“Vaginal dryness before, during, and after menopause is completely normal,” says Kathleen Schaeffer, DO, FACOG, an obstetrician/gynecologist at Cooper University Health Care. “Instead of worrying that it might affect you, assume it will – and prepare. Over-the-counter vaginal moisturizers applied every few days can alleviate discomfort. Lubricants as simple as coconut oil applied during sex can help too. If these aren’t enough, ask your OB/GYN about a low-dose vaginal estrogen cream, tablet, ring, or a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) pill.”

Consider menopausal hormone replacement therapy

If hot flashes significantly interfere with your daily life, don’t panic. If you’re within the first 10 years of menopause and are relatively healthy, menopausal hormone replacement therapy (MHRT) may be an option that can provide relief.

“Hormone replacement therapy is just what it sounds like,” Dr. Schaeffer says. “A woman takes estrogen and progesterone in the form of a pill, patch, topical gel or spray, or vaginal ring to replace the estrogen and progesterone her body has stopped making.”

Hormone replacement therapy does carry risks for women over age 60 as well as women with a history of certain health conditions. You should turn to a gynecologist you trust to determine whether this treatment is right for you.

“Hormone replacement therapy can provide relief for the right candidates, but it’s a decision that should be made carefully, with a trusted specialist,” Dr. Schaeffer says.

Eat smarter

Hormone fluctuations, loss of muscle mass, and insulin resistance can lead to weight gain during menopause. Tried-and-true healthy choices (drinking water, exercising, limiting calories, eating more fruits and vegetables) can help, but consider taking things further by adopting what’s widely referred to as a Mediterranean diet.

In a study of 6,000 women between the ages of 50 and 55, those who committed to a Mediterranean diet – lean protein, nuts and seeds, whole grains, legumes, healthy oils, and even moderate amounts of pasta and red wine – were 20% less likely to report menopause symptoms.

Speaking of the Mediterranean: Seek adventure!

By the time women reach menopause, most have routines in place for hobbies, music, travel, and more. However, shaking up the usual habits can create excitement that can help to offset some of the challenges of menopause. Adventure doesn’t have to include travel. Something as simple as taking an online course to learn a new skill or getting involved with a community organization can enrich this stage of life.

“Menopause has challenging moments for most women, but it can be a more positive and enjoyable season of life than many messages lead us to believe,” Dr. Schaeffer says. “Having a doctor you feel comfortable talking with is key.”

Looking for a gynecologist or primary care physician to help you navigate menopause or perimenopause?

Come mejor
