But how do you know if your forgetfulness is a sign of something more serious?

There are many reasons for memory loss, and some of them are potentially reversible or treatable.

“Stress, poor sleep, exhaustion, dehydration, metabolic conditions, vitamin deficiencies, and side effects from medications can all cause memory loss, but these factors may be addressed through lifestyle changes and simple to multi-level interventions by your health care provider,” says Merin Campbell, PsyD, a clinical neuropsychologist at Cooper University Health Care.

Mild cognitive changes may also occur naturally and gradually as part of the aging process.

“As we age, changes take place in all parts of our bodies, including our brains,” Dr. Campbell explains. “It may take longer for us to learn new things, and we may struggle with certain aspects of recall. These experiences do not necessarily signal the onset of Alzheimer’s disease or other progressive neurocognitive condition.”

Medical Conditions That Cause Memory Loss

Medical conditions such as brain tumors, blood clots or infections in the brain, head injuries, and some thyroid, kidney, or liver disorders can impair memory and require immediate medical attention. Diseases such as alcoholism and depression can also affect brain function. Over time, even common conditions, such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and diabetes, can result in brain changes that are associated with memory loss. Consistent treatment may reduce the likelihood of cognitive progression or the development of certain types of dementia.

Progressive Diseases: More Than Memory Loss

Some conditions that cause memory loss have no cure, although progression can be slowed and the impact of symptoms reduced through treatment. These conditions include mild cognitive impairment, dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease, which is an underlying cause of a severe type of dementia.

Mild cognitive impairment is not as severe as Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias. Symptoms include losing things often, forgetting names or important events, losing one’s train of thought, and struggling to come up with words, especially the words for common objects.

Dementia is defined as loss of cognitive function that interferes with daily life and activity. Symptoms include:

Experiencing memory loss, poor judgment, or confusion, and repeating statements or questions

Having trouble speaking, understanding, and expressing thoughts, or having trouble reading and writing

Wandering and getting lost in a familiar location

Having difficulty handling money responsibly and paying bills

Using uncommon words to refer to everyday objects

Taking longer to complete routine daily tasks

Losing interest in normal daily activities or events

Hallucinating or experiencing delusions or paranoia

Acting impulsively

Experiencing irritability or mood swings

Losing one’s balance and having problems with movement

“About 33% of people over the age of 85 experience some form of cognitive dysfunction,” Dr. Campbell says. “There is no one test to determine if someone has dementia, so it’s important to speak to your physician to seek the best course of diagnosis and care.”

Alzheimer’s disease is the most commonly diagnosed form of dementia and accounts for 60% or more of all diagnosed cases.

“There can be confusion around the difference between dementia and Alzheimer’s disease,” Dr. Campbell says. “Dementia is a general set of symptoms, while Alzheimer’s is a specific disease. We still have much to learn about the causes of Alzheimer’s, but research has shown that it affects cognition in a specific way, allowing for diagnosis and more individualized treatment.”

In its early stages, Alzheimer’s usually affects the part of the brain associated with learning. As it advances, symptoms worsen and can include disorientation, increased confusion, paranoia, and personality changes. Eventually, patients start to lose physical control and may have difficulty speaking, swallowing, and walking.

When To Get Help

“If you are concerned about memory loss in yourself or a loved one, and especially if it is affecting the ability to perform daily tasks, speak to your primary health care provider immediately,” Dr. Campbell advises.

In the case of an advancing condition, such as Alzheimer’s disease, an early diagnosis can give you and your loved ones time to prepare for the future.

“In addition to beginning treatment to manage symptoms, an early diagnosis gives you time to educate yourself and your family about your condition, discuss future care preferences, and attend to financial and legal matters,” Dr. Campbell explains.

Most importantly, don’t try to hide your condition. Rather, talk to a family member, friend, or medical professional about what you are experiencing. It’s also important for friends and family to not overcompensate for a loved one who seems to be failing cognitively.

“While it can be painful to acknowledge dementia,” Dr. Campbell says, “early intervention and treatment provide the best chances of prolonging functionality and preparing for a life that provides safety, comfort, and dignity.”

If you are concerned about memory loss in yourself or a loved one, call 800.8.COOPER (800.826.6737) or use our online appointment request form to make an appointment with your primary care provider, who will determine whether further assessment would be beneficial.
