There are many other benefits to quitting smoking as well.<\/p>\n<p>Smoking remains the single largest preventable cause of death and illness in the world, and about 1 in 5 deaths can be attributed to smoking. While we have been making progress in reducing the number of smokers the U.S., for the first time in 20 years, cigarette sales increased last year.<\/p>\n<p>Considering how stressful 2020 was, it\u2019s not hard to understand why more people were reaching for a cigarette to cope with the pandemic. Nicotine can produce a quick burst of dopamine\u2014which triggers feelings of reward and motivation causing it to be highly addictive. The short term pleasure, however, pales in comparison to the long-term danger to your health.<\/p>\n<p>For a smoker, going 24 hours without tobacco may feel ambitious, but the benefits are worth it. In fact, within minutes of smoking your last cigarette, your body begins to recover and experiences the following benefits:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>20 minutes after quitting:<\/strong> Your heart rate and blood pressure drop back to normal<\/li>\n<li><strong>24 hours after quitting:<\/strong> The nicotine level in your blood drops to zero<\/li>\n<li><strong>2 days after quitting:<\/strong> Your sense of smell improves and food starts to taste better<\/li>\n<li><strong>2 to 3 days after quitting:<\/strong> Carbon monoxide levels in your blood drop to normal<\/li>\n<li><strong>2 weeks to 3 months after quitting:<\/strong> Your circulation improves and your lung function increases<\/li>\n<li><strong>1 to 12 months after quitting:<\/strong> Your coughing and shortness of breath decrease<\/li>\n<li><strong>1 year after quitting:<\/strong> Your risk of heart attack drops dramatically<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Quitting smoking also lowers the risk of 12 types of cancer, cardiovascular disease, COPD, and diabetes.
