Or maybe you said it to your kids this morning. \u201cStand up straight!\u201d is enduring advice for good reason: Lengthening the spine can boost how we feel about ourselves and even how others perceive us.<\/p>\n<p>The benefits don\u2019t stop there. Holding your body properly can improve your overall health. From your head to your heart, your entire body benefits when you practice good posture.<\/p>\n<p>What is good posture exactly?<\/p>\n<p>Good posture isn\u2019t quite as simple as standing up straight.<\/p>\n<p>Medically speaking, posture describes how you hold your body in any position. Sitting, standing, or lying down is known as static posture because you\u2019re not moving. Walking, exercising, lifting, or going about everyday movement is known as dynamic posture because your body is engaged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn any scenario, you achieve good posture when you maintain your spine\u2019s three natural curves at your neck, mid back, and lower back,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooperhealth.org\/doctors\/courtney-budd-pt\">Courtney Budd, PT, MSPT, CSCS, PES<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooperhealth.org\/services\/rehabilitation-and-physical-therapy\">physical therapist<\/a> at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooperhealth.org\/\">Cooper University Health Care<\/a>. \u201cThe goal it to distribute gravity evenly throughout your body so that no joints, ligaments, or muscles are overstressed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Budd suggests the following to achieve healthy posture in any position:<\/p>\n<p>When not moving:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Keep your shoulders back\u2014not rounded forward.<\/li>\n<li>Pull in your abdominals, also known as engaging your core.<\/li>\n<li>When sitting, keep your feet on the floor and your ankles in front of your knees. Don\u2019t cross your legs.<\/li>\n<li>Keep your lower back fully supported by a backrest, rolled towel, or pillow for support.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When engaged or moving:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When standing, keep your feet shoulder width apart and your weight evenly distributed between both feet.<\/li>\n<li>Keep your neck, back, hips, and feet aligned\u2014don\u2019t bend or twist at the waist. If lifting, try to lift with the legs.<\/li>\n<li>Pull in your abdominals, engaging your core.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Make good posture a habit, and unlock these larger health benefits:<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4><strong>Less lower back pain<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Incorrect posture can create stress on muscles, spinal joints, and spinal discs\u2014causing back pain. By practicing good posture, you remove stress on those muscles, joints, and spinal discs. The lumbar (lower back) is a common source of pain and benefits greatly from improved posture.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Better digestion and breathing<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Posture affects digestion. Digestion requires high volumes of blood, and blood flow is largely determined by body position. When you sit or stand up straight, blood can flow freely to your stomach and gut, letting them digest food without extra work. Watch your posture before and after you eat, and you may notice less bloating, discomfort, constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, acid reflux, or gas.<\/p>\n<p>If you sit in a slouched position, it limits the ability of the diaphragm to expand the lungs. This decreased expansion means reduced lung capacity and less oxygen saturation.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Fewer headaches<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Because poor posture stresses your body, it can create tension headaches\u2014especially if your upper back and neck are misaligned. Exercises that strengthen your neck and core muscles can help to make good posture a habit, and prevent you from getting a throbbing headache.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>More energy<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>When your body is properly aligned, your organs\u2014including your lungs\u2014get the oxygen they need, and muscles are less likely to experience fatigue. Proper alignment of your organs can help you feel more alert and more energized.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Improved self-confidence <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Good posture does more than make you look better (and taller!)\u2014it can elevate your confidence, mood, and even your sense of yourself.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Better posture = Better health<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>\u201cThe prospect of better health is great reason to improve your posture,\u201d says Budd. \u201cOver time, poor posture can lead to chronic back pain, joint degeneration, poor circulation, restricted movement, poor aesthetics, poor balance, and other spine changes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So, the next time you feel yourself crouched over your laptop or slumping on the sofa, take a few minutes to sit-up, stand, and stretch \u2013 your body will thank you.<\/p>\n<p>To attain ideal posture, Budd advises to pull your shoulders back, pull your head back, and to engage your core musculature. \u201cImagine someone is pulling you up with a string. Try to bring your belly button in towards your spine, and sit up tall.
