Exercise is sure-fire way to improve your overall health and well-being.

There are many benefits to exercise. Engaging in an exercise program will increase your strength and flexibility, boost your mood, and reduce your risk of chronic health conditions, such as hypertension or diabetes.

“We all know the importance of getting plenty of exercise,” says sports medicine specialist David B. Gealt, DO, of the Cooper University Health Care’s Bone and Joint Institute. “Being physically active reduces your risk for a host of diseases and increases your life span and quality of life.”

Dr. Gealt explains that it’s important to check with your doctor before embarking on an exercise plan, especially if you have:

A heart condition or family history of heart disease

High blood pressure

Diabetes

Obesity

Asthma

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

A history of smoking

A prior or existing joint injury; or

Any other serious medical condition

People who are 50 and older should also consider a visit with a doctor to review risk factors associated with exercise.

“A doctor will take your medical history and ask questions, such as whether you have chest pain or shortness of breath. For instance, can you carry groceries up a flight of stairs without getting out of breath?” Dr. Gealt says.

As you age, the likelihood of high blood pressure and high cholesterol increases. Therefore, you should report any symptoms that you may be experiencing so your doctor can assess what type exercise is right for you or diagnose and treat any conditions that you may have.

“Certain cardiac conditions need to be fully evaluated before you start an exercise program,” Dr. Gealt says. “If someone has coronary disease, heart valve problems, or arrhythmias, then these should be diagnosed and treated before the person begins an exercise program. It may be necessary to see a cardiologist.”

Another potential problem you should have diagnosed before starting an exercise program is osteoporosis. This disease, which causes brittle bones, sometimes is not diagnosed until a bone is broken or fractured. Testing is highly recommended for women and men older than 50.

Equally serious is type 2 diabetes, which affects nearly 24 million Americans. An estimated 25 percent of people do not know that they have the disease because they experience no symptoms. Certain factors, such as being overweight and having a family history of diabetes, increase your risk. To control diabetes, you need to plan your meals and exercise sessions carefully.

If you have asthma, you should be certain that your condition is well controlled before you begin an exercise program. To be sure, check with your doctor.

Getting Started

“The idea is to go slowly,” Dr. Gealt says. “For most people, a walking program is the best way to get started. Swimming and cycling can also be good choices. Whichever exercise you choose, slowly build your time and intensity from week to week.” Keeping an exercise journal is a great way to plan your workouts and stay motivated.

When you do get permission to proceed from your doctor, be sure to pay attention to your body.

Symptoms that warn you to stop exercising and see your doctor include:

Chest tightness

Dizziness

Arm pain

Confusion

Any unusual pain or symptoms that you do not normally experience

Here are some exercise tips:

Drink plenty of water before, during, and after your activity. Avoid high-calorie energy drinks.

Wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing.

Select well-constructed shoes with the right amount of support and cushion for your chosen activity.

Keep a list of any medications you take as well your name and emergency contact information with you.

Carry a cell phone if you have one.

Enlist a walking “buddy” to help you stay motivated.

Your primary care provider is a great place to begin a discussion about starting an exercise program. If you don’t already have a primary care provider, call 800.8.COOPER (800.826.6737) or use our online appointment form to make an appointment.
