Jerrido, DPM, a podiatrist at Cooper University Health Care’s Bone and Joint Institute.

With a return to workplaces and more active social lives, many of us are wearing “real shoes” again, and our feet are not happy about it.

“We are seeing an uptick in patients with bunions, hammertoe, and heel pain,” Dr. Jerrido says. “Although many have dealt with these issues for years, we are probably seeing more of them because of the months we have spent at home.”

Let’s look at some of the more common causes of foot pain and what you can do about them.

Bunions

A bunion is a hard bump on the lower joint of the big toe or little toe (bunionette) that forms when bones in the front part of the foot become misaligned. Tight-fitting shoes are usually the culprit, but not always. The natural shape of the foot and arthritis can also cause bunions.

What to do:

Apply bunion pads to the swollen joint.

Apply ice or cold compresses.

Wear shoes that don’t compress the toes.

Keep your toes flexible by stretching them regularly.

“In some cases, surgery is necessary to relieve the pain,” says Dr. Jerrido. “However, recovery can take weeks to months.”

Corns

These small, round, yellow bumps most often form on the top of the toes but can also develop on the outer edges of the soles of the feet. They are caused by pressure from another toe or poorly fitting shoes.

What to do:

Wear corn pads that relieve pressure on the spot.

Trim the corn by shaving the layers of dead skin.

Wear larger shoes that fit your foot comfortably and do not rub.

Hammertoe

This condition is characterized by upward bending of the middle joint of the second, third, or fourth toe and is usually caused by muscle imbalance and ill-fitting shoes. It is not uncommon for a person with bunions to have hammertoe as well.

What to do:

Apply padding to create a cushion between the highest part of the toe and the shoe.

Choose shoes with a broad, deep toe bed.

Consult your health care provider, who may recommend exercises to relax the muscle and flatten the toe.

Heel Pain

“Heel pain may occur under the heel or behind it, and it has several causes,” says Dr. Jerrido.

Achilles Tendonitis

The Achilles tendon is a fibrous tissue that connects the calf muscle to the heel bone. Overuse causes inflammation that results in pain, swelling, and stiffness in the back of the heel.

What to do:

Rest your foot.

Apply ice to the tendon to decrease pain and swelling.

Wrap the heel and ankle to reduce swelling and limit movement of the tendon.

Raise the foot to above the level of your heart when resting, and sleep with the foot elevated.

“If home remedies do not decrease the swelling or pain within a few weeks, seek the advice of your health care provider,” Dr. Jerrido says. “The issue may be a tear, which is much more serious than tendonitis and will require more intensive treatment.”

Plantar Fasciitis

Planter fasciitis is an inflammation of the band of tough tissue that connects the heel bone to the toes causes pain in the heel or arch. The pain is usually the most severe when you first get out of bed.

What to do:

Rest your foot.

Stretch the muscles in the heel and foot.

Try an over-the-counter pain reliever.

Choose shoes with good arch support and a cushioned sole.

Heel Spurs

Bone growths at the bottom of the heel are caused by ill-fitting shoes, an abnormal walking gait or posture, or activities like running. Many people have heel spurs, but those with flat feet or high arches are more likely to feel pain.

What to do:

Wear a cut-out heel pad.

Choose well-fitting shoes with shock-absorbing soles.

Use over-the-counter pain relievers.

Rest the foot, and apply a cold pack.

“If these remedies do not help, it’s important to contact your health care provider,” Dr. Jerrido says. “They may prescribe physical therapy or a custom orthotic. For severe, prolonged pain, surgery may be necessary.”

How to Avoid Most Foot Pain

“Wearing shoes that fit correctly and provide the support you need is the single best way to avoid foot pain,” says Dr. Jerrido. She offers the following tips for choosing shoes:

Make sure that your shoes match your foot shape and have a toe box that doesn’t put pressure on your toes. There should be 3/8 inch to 1/2 inch of space between the tip of your longest toe and the end of the shoe.

Try on both shoes. Often one foot is slightly larger than the other; be sure that the shoes fit the larger foot.

Shop for shoes in the afternoon. Your feet tend to swell during the day, and it’s best to try on shoes later in the day to ensure a comfortable fit.

Make sure that the shoes are comfortable when you try them on. Don’t expect to “break in” your shoes.

Avoid high heels. Look for styles with heels of no more than 1- 1/2 inches. The higher the heel, the more pressure is placed on the front of the foot, which causes problems down the road.

“Intricate and hard-working, our feet contain 26 bones, 30 joints, and more than 100 muscles, tendons, and ligaments,” Dr. Jerrido says. “They are mini-machines that can take us far, but they may need a tune-up from time to time.”

If you are experiencing foot pain that interferes with your daily activities, make an appointment with a specialist at the Cooper Bone and Joint Institute by calling 800.8.COOPER (800.826.6737), or use our online appointment request form.
