Literally.

From stress to food sensitivities, various factors can wreak havoc on your digestive health. How do you know when to check in with your doctor?

You don’t have to rely on your gut instinct alone. There are signs that indicate you should start taking your symptoms seriously. Tara Lautenslager, MD, a gastroenterologist at Cooper University Health Care, reviews the most common gastrointestinal (GI) issues, their symptoms, and when to visit your physician for a closer look.

Constipation

Constipation is common, particularly among older adults. As many as 60% of adults older than the age of 60 will experience constipation at some point.

Changing your diet can help. Adding more high-fiber foods (fruits, vegetables, and whole grains) and increasing water intake to at least 64 ounces a day will often ease symptoms. There are also over-the-counter medications, such as stool softeners and laxatives that can help people to pass stool more easily.

“Most people find relief with at-home treatments,” Dr. Lautenslager says. “But if adjusting your diet and using nonprescription medications aren’t helping or if you experience bleeding or intense pain, you should be evaluated by your physician.”

GERD

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a chronic condition that can include symptoms such as heartburn, regurgitation, and a sour taste at the back of the tongue. Some people may have a hoarse voice or chronic cough. There are many over-the-counter medications available to treat symptoms.

“Most of the over-the-counter medications suggest a two-week trial,” Dr. Lautenslager says. “If you are having symptoms for longer than two weeks, you should make an appointment to see your physician.”

Some symptoms of GERD can be signs of a more serious condition and should be evaluated by a doctor as soon as possible. These include pain or difficulty when swallowing, constant abdominal discomfort, and bleeding (bringing up blood or passing blood in the stool).

Celiac disease

Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder in which your body has an allergy to gluten, a protein found in wheat and wheat derivatives, barley, rye, triticale, malt, and brewer’s yeast. Celiac disease is more common in Caucasians, and experts estimate that about 2 million people in the U.S. have the disease. Celiac disease is often diagnosed when people are in their teens to 20s, but it can be diagnosed at older age. Symptoms can include bloating, cramping, frequent diarrhea, and weight loss.

If you’re experiencing any of those symptoms, see your physician for a screening. Treatment includes following a strict gluten-free diet.

Inflammatory bowel disease

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a group of autoimmune conditions that cause chronic inflammation and distress of the digestive tract. Conditions such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis fall into this category.

Abdominal pain, weight loss, and bloody diarrhea are common symptoms of these disorders, and any of them would be reason to check in with your doctor. Treatment varies depending on the condition and severity of symptoms.

Gallstones

Gallstones occur when solid cholesterol material clumps and forms masses in the gallbladder, a small organ in the upper-right part of the stomach. While some people experience symptoms, others don’t. Symptoms may include pain across the upper abdomen, nausea, and vomiting.

“People often describe it as squeezing or tightness. Pain is usually triggered by meals, generally starting about 30 minutes after eating,” Dr. Lautenslager says. “Symptoms generally last for a few hours and then go away.”

Excess cholesterol can contribute to gallstones, and eating high-fat food may irritate the gallbladder and trigger episodes of pain. Symptoms that become more frequent and painful should be evaluated by a doctor, who may suggest surgery to remove the gallbladder.

Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids, which are swollen veins near the anus or lower rectum, are common and can be a nuisance. However, the good news is that they usually aren’t serious.

“Constipation and straining during bowel movements can cause irritation that leads to hemorrhoids, so treating the constipation is a priority,” Dr. Lautenslager says.

Many creams, ointments, and lotions found at the pharmacy can provide relief. It might be time to see a doctor if over-the-counter treatment doesn’t help, if the condition becomes increasingly painful, or if you experience frequent bleeding.

Prescription ointments may help and surgical and nonsurgical options are available for severe cases.

If you are experiencing any of these digestive symptoms, make an appointment with a specialist at Cooper’s Digestive Health Institute by calling 800.8.COOPER (800.826.6737), or use our online appointment request form.
