Fast forward to adulthood, and one in three adults who had chickenpox as a kid will go on to have shingles—a painful rash—often when they least expect it.

“Shingles is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox: varicella-zoster, a type of herpes virus,” explains Dr. Bennett Shenker, MD, MS, MSPH, FAAFP, Chief and Chair of Family and Community Medicine at Cooper University Health Care. “After you recover from chickenpox, the virus lies dormant in your body and can return at any time, especially after the age of 50.”

Risk factors for shingles include:

Age older than 50

Certain diseases that weaken the immune system, such as HIV/AIDS and cancer

Radiation or chemotherapy

Prolonged use of steroids or other immunosuppressive treatments

Stress

Although the two diseases are caused by the same virus, the shingles rash differs from the widespread outbreak of chickenpox. The shingles rash is described as clusters of painful, itchy, red bumps on the skin that blister and eventually scab over. Many people feel pain or tingling on the skin before the shingles rash appears. Although uncommon, symptoms such as headache, fever, and sensitivity to light may occur in some patients in the days before the rash appears.

“Shingles can occur anywhere on the body, but the rash often starts as a strip of blisters that wraps around either the left or right side of your torso,” Dr. Shenker says. “The rash can also involve your eyes, which, if left untreated, can lead to permanent eye damage.”

Treatment for shingles consists of pain control and the administration of antiviral medications within three days of the rash’s appearance. Your body will eventually clear the rash, but it is possible to get a secondary bacterial infection due to skin breakdown.

“Most cases of shingles will begin to crust over and heal by one to two weeks,” Dr. Shenker says. “A person with active shingles can spread the virus to others when the rash is in the blister phase, so it’s important to keep the rash covered. For people with normal immune systems, the rash is not usually contagious once the blisters crust over.”

The most common complication of shingles is postherpetic neuralgia. For many people, this pain continues long after the shingles blisters have cleared. It has been described as burning, stabbing, throbbing, and/or shooting pain in the area where the rash appeared. Postherpetic neuralgia pain can last for weeks or months, and occasionally for years.

A shingles vaccine exists, which has an 85% effective rate for the first four years after vaccination. It is recommended for those over 50 years of age and is given in two doses two to six months apart. The shingles vaccine is available at little or no cost at most pharmacies.

“Although the shingles vaccine may not fully prevent shingles, with a vaccine, an outbreak will likely be less painful and severe and will reduce your risk of postherpetic neuralgia,” Dr. Shenker notes.

If you are interested in the shingles vaccine and would like more information, please contact your Cooper primary care provider by calling 800.8.COOPER (800.826.6737), or use our online appointment request form.

Edad mayor the 50 años

Para leer en Español, por favor haga clic aquí For many adults, contracting chickenpox was a childhood rite of passage.
