Routine screenings also help prevent colorectal cancers.

March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month and it is a great time to schedule your colonoscopy screening if you are age 45 or older.

Colorectal Cancer Fast Facts

Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States.

Colorectal cancer affects men and women equally.

Rates of colorectal cancer have been declining among adults 50 years and older, but they have been increasing among adults younger than age 50.

Colorectal cancer can be prevented with regular screenings.

Because the number of people younger than 50 being diagnosed with cancer is on the rise, organizations such as the American Cancer Society and the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force now recommend colorectal cancer screenings to start at age 45. However, if you have a family history of colon cancer or are considered a high-risk patient, screenings should begin earlier. Talk to your physician to determine what is right for you.

Experts are unsure what is causing the increase in colorectal cancer among young adults. However, known risk factors for colorectal cancer in older adults include obesity, physical inactivity, and smoking.

Prevention Is Key

Many screening tests are available, including at-home options that use stool samples, such as FIT test or Cologuard. However, a colonoscopy remains the gold standard for screening.

“The advantage of a colonoscopy is that it provides definitive results, and if polyps are found, we can remove them during the procedure—preventing cancer on the spot,” says Adam B. Elfant, MD, Head, Division of Gastroenterology at Cooper Digestive Health Institute. “But the best screening test is the one that gets done.”

Don’t Fear the Prep

Many people put off getting a colonoscopy because of fear or anxiety about the process. It’s not the actual procedure that causes concern—you are asleep for that—but it’s the preparation that gets a bad rap.

Although prep can be inconvenient, it is crucial to ensure a successful colonoscopy. Your colon must be empty and clean to so that your physician can see clearly to detect any abnormalities.

The colonoscopy procedure is brief—only about 30 minutes. You will receive a sedative to put you in a “twilight sleep.” Any abnormal cells, or polyps, found during the screening are removed before they can develop into cancer. After your colonoscopy, you may be slightly groggy from the sedative, so you will need to arrange for safe transportation home.

“Our team at Cooper makes the entire process as easy as possible,” Dr. Elfant says. “We also remind patients that this procedure can save your life.”

Advanced Treatment for Colorectal Cancer

If you or someone you love has been diagnosed with colorectal cancer or another gastrointestinal cancer, one of the most important decisions you will make is where to go for care.
