It’s important to know when to see a physician if you feel something is wrong.”

Common Sources of Hip Pain

Hip pain may have a variety of causes that could include:

Bursitis — inflammation in the jelly-like sac that protects bones from the friction of rubbing against muscles and tendons

Labral tear — a tear of the cartilage in the hip joint

Hip impingement — an abnormally shaped hip joint (also known as a femoral acetabular impingement or FAI)

Osteoarthritis — wear and tear that can affect any joint, including the hip

Tendonitis — an overuse injury that can affect athletes and other people who are active

Sometimes a person’s age can provide a clue about the source of the pain.

“People who are in their 50s and 60s may start to have wear-and-tear symptoms associated with osteoarthritis, a condition that occurs when the cartilage in the joint begins to break down,” Dr. Brown says.

Pain experienced by active younger people is more commonly caused by tendonitis or a labral tear.

Location of Pain

Depending on the causes, pain may occur in various areas. With bursitis, the discomfort generally occurs on the side of your thigh or buttocks — areas people often associate with the hip.

Some other hip conditions cause discomfort in the groin. The hip joint and groin are in the same area of the body, so patients with groin pain due to a hip issue often suspect a groin injury at first.

The important thing is to get the problem looked at by a doctor, whether it’s your primary care physician, a sports medicine expert, or a rehabilitation specialist.

“Everyone experiences pain occasionally, but if the pain persists for more than two weeks, despite rest and over-the-counter pain medication, it’s time to get evaluated by a doctor,” Dr. Brown says.

Dangers of Ignoring Hip Pain and Discomfort

The biggest disadvantage of putting off a visit to the doctor for hip pain is the possibility of missing something serious.

“Patients may try to ‘just deal with it’ and manage the pain on their own,” Dr. Brown says. “But by delaying treatment, you could miss a stress fracture due to osteoporosis, a chronic hip condition, or bone diseases.”

For the usual causes of hip pain, the biggest downside of toughing it out is living with unnecessary pain, which may worsen over time.

Working with your doctor to receive a diagnosis and treatment plan can help decrease pain and improve your quality of life. For many people, treatment does not include surgery. Rest and physical therapy may be all you need.

Treatment: When Surgery Becomes a Consideration

When conservative treatment doesn’t help, surgery may be an option. Your physician will talk with you about the risks and benefits.

Hip surgery has come a long way. In most cases, surgeons use minimally invasive techniques with small incisions. Many patients are able to go home the same day. Advances in anesthesia and medications to reduce blood loss have also helped to improve surgery results and speed recovery.

“We can certainly get patients better very quickly with surgery, but any operation has potential risks,” Dr. Brown says. “For my patients, I consider surgery as a last resort option that we discuss carefully together.”

If you are experiencing hip pain that interferes with your daily activities, make an appointment with a specialist at the Cooper Bone and Joint Institute by calling 800.8.COOPER (800.826.6737), or use our online appointment request form.

¿Dolor de cadera?
