Often, people choose to avoid or delay treatment because they are worried about surgery and recovery time. However, hernias should not be ignored. If left untreated they usually get larger, become increasingly painful, and in some cases, can cause serious health risks.

“A hernia is an abnormal protrusion, or bulging out, of part of an organ through the connective tissue, or muscle, that normally contains it,” explains Frank C. Koniges, MD, FACS, a general surgeon who specializes in hernia surgery at Cooper University Health Care. “Hernias can affect men, women, and children, and they can occur at any age.”

People who engage in heavy lifting or repetitive activities that put stress on the lower body may be at higher risk for hernias. Other risk factors include pregnancy and labor, constipation, and genetics. Hernias can also run in families.

The most common sign of a hernia is a noticeable bulge in the abdomen or groin area, where there is a weakness in the muscle. Many times, a hernia is only visible when a person lifts something heavy, bends over, coughs, or laughs. Hernias don’t always hurt, but the bulge may get bigger and more painful over time.

Types of Hernias

Hernias affect people in different ways. There are many types, but the most common are:

Inguinal hernia: This is the most common type of hernia. About 75% to 80% of hernias are inguinal and appears as a bulge at the groin area. These are sometimes present at birth, but can be found at any age. This type of hernia is more common in men, but can be found in women.

Umbilical hernia: These are protrusions that occur around the belly button area, just beneath the skin’s surface. They are more common in infants and are usually painless.

Abdominal wall hernia: This type of hernia often appears at the site of a previous abdominal incision, but may occur without one.

Femoral hernia: These are similar to inguinal hernias, but they occur in a different part of the groin, near the upper/inner thigh. These are not very common, but they are more frequent in women.

Hiatal hernia: This type of hernia occurs when the upper part of the stomach protrudes into the chest through the small opening in the diaphragm. This can lead to a digestive disorder called GERD — commonly known as reflux or heartburn. These are common in people over 50.

“Hernias cannot heal on their own,” Dr. Koniges says. “Only surgery can repair a hernia, but depending on the size of the hernia, some patients may never need surgery.”

When Do You Need Hernia Surgery?

Hernia repair is recommended when a hernia is painful or when symptoms interfere with daily activities. Repair is urgent when a hernia interferes with blood flow (called a strangulated hernia) or becomes “stuck” and causes intestinal obstruction. This situation is very serious and would require emergency surgery.

“It’s important for patients to be mindful of their hernia and any changes that may occur,” Dr. Koniges says.

Cooper surgeons provide expertise in the repair of all types of hernias, and they offer various treatment options based on the patient’s age, health, and lifestyle. Options include minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery and traditional open-repair techniques.

Hernia surgery is typically an outpatient surgical procedure, with patients returning home the same day. Recovery can last several days to a few weeks, depending on the extent of the repair. Larger or more complex repairs may require a brief hospital stay.

“Our goal is to return patients to a pain-free life as quickly as possible,” Dr. Koniges says. “We are here to answer all questions so patients can make the most informed decisions about their health.”

For an appointment with a hernia surgeon or to discuss your symptoms with a physician, call 800.8.COOPER (800.826.6737) or use our online form to make an appointment.
