Varicose veins are more common in women and often appear blue, bulging, and twisted. If left untreated, varicose veins may worsen over time.

“Varicose veins are more than just a cosmetic problem,” says Joseph V. Lombardi, MD, FACS, Head, Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at Cooper University Health Care. “They can affect your quality of life and also lead to serious issues.”

Symptoms and Risk Factors

Factors that can increase the risk of varicose veins include having a family history of varicose veins, being overweight, not exercising enough, smoking, and standing or sitting for long periods. Another cause can be having deep vein thrombosis (DVT), which occurs when a blood clot forms in one or more of the deep veins in your body. Pregnant women also have an increased risk of varicose veins, but the veins often return to normal within one year after childbirth.

Varicose veins cause the legs to feel heavy, tired, restless, or achy. Standing or sitting for too long may worsen these symptoms. Night cramps also may occur. Varicose veins can cause skin changes, such as rashes, redness, and sores. Severe varicose veins can lead to slightly increased chances of DVT, which may cause sudden, severe leg swelling and requires immediate medical attention.

For those with mild to moderate varicose veins, elevating the legs can help to reduce swelling and relieve other symptoms. You can try to elevate your legs above your heart three or four times a day for about 15 minutes at a time. People who need to stand for a long period can flex their legs occasionally to help keep blood moving toward the heart.

Compression stockings can be used to ease the pain of varicose veins. The stockings squeeze the legs, helping the veins and leg muscles to move blood more efficiently. For many patients, compression stockings can effectively treat varicose veins, and no other treatments are necessary.

Advanced Treatment Options Available at Cooper

Once you experience varicose veins, they do not go away on their own. Treatment is necessary to relieve symptoms and reduce their appearance.

“Cooper offers a number of minimally invasive procedures to address varicose and spider veins,” Dr. Lombardi says. “Most patients are back on their feet in as little as a day or two, and they can resume normal activities within a week.”

Treatment options include:

Varethina, a minimally invasive and nonsurgical procedure that collapses the problem veins with a specially formulated foam. There is very little down time with this option, and patients are able to walk out the door.

Radiofrequency ablation, which delivers heat to the vein wall, shrinking and sealing off the abnormal vein. It requires no incisions and is performed under local anesthesia with ultrasound.

Endovenous laser therapy, which uses ultrasound-guided laser energy to collapse and seal off the damaged vein. No surgical incisions are made.

Sclerotherapy, which is performed when a physician injects a chemical into the varicose veins. This chemical irritates and scars the veins from the inside so that the abnormal veins can no longer fill with blood. The blood then returns to the heart through other veins, and the body eventually absorbs the veins that received the injection.

Phelebectomy, which has become less needed, is used for larger veins that have become swollen and inflamed. A physician removes individual vein clusters from the leg through a series of small incisions. This minimally invasive procedure is done under local anesthesia using micro-instruments and magnification. No stitches are required, and patients are typically back on their feet immediately.

ClariVein, which is often simpler and faster than other minimally invasive peripheral vascular treatments. A physician inserts a thin tube into the varicose veins through a pin-sized entry point and uses both mechanical and chemical methods to treat the vein. Because no thermal energy is used, the procedure takes less time, is less painful, and causes no bruising.

Varicose veins cannot be cured, but there are ways to reduce the discomfort they can cause and keep them from getting worse. Dr. Lombardi recommends:

Walking is a great way to encourage blood circulation in the legs. A doctor can recommend an appropriate activity level.

Maintain a healthy weight and diet. Losing weight can take unnecessary pressure off the veins. Maintain a low-sodium, high-fiber diet. Daily fiber intake can be increased by eating whole grains and fresh fruit and vegetables.

Elevate your legs. One way to improve the circulation in the legs is to take several short breaks daily to elevate your legs above the level of your heart. Generally, lying down with your legs resting on three or four pillows is best.

Avoid sitting or standing for long periods. Changing position frequently encourages blood flow. Avoid sitting with your legs crossed because this puts pressure on the veins.

“Patients should know that they don’t have to live with the appearance and pain of varicose veins,” Dr. Lombardi says. “At Cooper, we discuss all treatment options and work with each patient to create a care plan that fits their needs.”

The vascular team at Cooper University Health Care can treat your varicose veins using the most advanced and minimally invasive techniques. A menudo aparecen azules, abultadas y retorcidas.
