And we don’t mean data overage fees or the price of the latest, greatest smartphone.

“Text neck,” ”selfie elbow,” and a host of other ailments that didn’t exist in the 20th century plague many of us today as we obsessively text, scroll, post, and swipe. All that action on our smartphones, tablets, and other digital devices places stress on our hands, wrists, thumbs, and elbows that can lead to numbness, pain, and even impairment.

“Problems arise when we use our electronic devices for too long or the wrong way,” says Sarah Donley, MS, OT, an occupational therapist and certified hand therapist at Cooper University Health Care. “When we hold our necks, arms, and hands in abnormal positions for a long time, we risk strain and overuse injuries.”

The same goes for repetitive motions such as swiping or scrolling. “What starts as a minor irritation can turn into a serious health issue if unaddressed,” Donley says. “Many device-related injuries involve our tendons, the cordlike structures that connect bone to muscle. Those tendons become irritated from overuse or pressure from keeping our hands, shoulders, and elbows in uncomfortable positions for prolonged periods.”

Here are some of the most prevalent issues related to device use:

Cell phone elbow: Officially known as cubital tunnel syndrome, cell phone elbow is irritation or compression of the ulnar nerve, which provides sensation to a portion of the hand and ring finger, and the small finger. Holding your phone to your ear compresses the ulnar nerve, which isn’t a problem when you keep your calls short. But chatting too long too often can inflame the nerve, causing tingling and numbness in the lower arm and hand.

Carpal tunnel syndrome: Like cell phone elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome is a painful, progressive condition. It’s caused by pressure on the median nerve, which runs from forearm to palm through a smalls space in the wrist called the carpal tunnel. Although carpal tunnel syndrome is often associated with using a computer mouse, holding your wrist in an awkward position while using hand held digital devices can cause the same tingling and numbness in the hand and wrist as well as sharp, shooting pain through the upper arm.

Tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow: These conditions retain the names from the sports that most commonly cause them, but digital device users are developing these conditions without ever stepping on a court or fairway. Tennis elbow affects the tendon of the outer elbow, while golfer’s elbow is an irritation of the tendon of the inner elbow. In both, pain occurs near the elbow and can radiate into the upper arm or forearm.

Text neck: Hunching over a device for hours while scrolling, swiping, and texting can cause neck and back and pain and spasms. Other symptoms include tension headaches and a grating or cracking of the neck.

How to Protect Yourself

Although digital devices have become indispensable tools for everyday use, a few precautions can help you avoid discomfort and injury.

Limit screen time.

Take regular breaks.

Gently stretch wrists and neck regularly.

Use earbuds or a speaker when talking on the phone.

Maintain good posture: sit and stand up straight.

Treating An Injury

“Minor discomfort from overuse of digital devices can be treated at home with heat, ice, and actiity modification,” Donley says. “Over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, can often relieve minor pain.”

Donley recommends talking to your health care provider about any discomfort that does not respond to over-the-counter pain relievers, or that lingers more than a few weekk, interfering with you daily activities.

“Neck pain that begins shooting down one or both arms or causes difficulty walking is a sure sign to seek immediate help,” Donley states. “Seek help promptly to reduce the risk of problems extending to other areas like the shoulder, which can affect mobility and the ability to perform normal daily activities.”

People who need more intensive treatment may benefit from hand therapy or braces for the hand and wrist.

“If a corticosteroid injection is recommended by your physician, it can also provide temporary relief,” Donley says. “For those whose symptoms are not eased by other interventions, surgery may be a last resort.”

Blue Light Blues

Our upper extremities are not the only parts of our bodies at risk from overuse of digital devices. The glow they emit affects our eyes and brain.

Digital devices give off blue light, which has shorter wavelengths and higher energy than other types of light. Blue light can be beneficial during daylight hours by boosting our attention, reaction time, and mood, but prolonged exposure may lead to vision changes.

After the sun goes down, blue light becomes even more problematic because it interrupts the circadian rhythm, also known as the sleep cycle. Blue light signals our brains to wake up instead of sleep.

Studies show that blue light poses even more problems for kids, whose eyes don’t filter it as well as adults’ eyes. In children, excessive exposure to blue light has been linked to nearsightedness, increased chance of obesity, and issues with attention.

To counter the effects of digital device blue light, try the following:

Use eyeglasses designed to filter blue light, which can cut 94% of blue light and lessen damage.

Stop using digital devices three hours before bedtime.

Limit screen time for children. Stop the use of all handheld devices, including digital games, several hours before bedtime.

While handheld digital devices have made our lives easier in many ways, they have the potential to cause long term health problems. To prevent harm to our bodies, we need to balance this modern convenience with appropriate caution.

“I think we can all use a break from our digital devices,” Donley recommends. “Putting down your phone or tablet to enjoy other activities is a great way to avoid hand, neck, and eye strain before it develops into a more serious condition that may require surgery.”

If you are experiencing pain that interferes with your daily activities, make an appointment with an expert at Cooper University Health Care by calling 800.8.COOPER (800.826.6737), or use our online appointment request form.

Para leer en Español, por favor haga clic aquí For all the convenience and connectivity they provide, smartphones and other digital devices can exact a high cost.
